About Kelly

I am a neuroscience consultant working in executive coaching, educator professional development and organizational training. I teach Research Methods, Psychopharmacology and Child and Adolescent Development to psychotherapy graduate students at Antioch University Los Angeles. My strength is translating complicated science into accessible language for all learners.

About the lesson

The most effective way to pass science enthusiasm on to students is to relate academic content to real and everyday life, underscoring its importance and relevance to them personally, culturally and otherwise. In my experience teaching undergraduates thus far, our most spirited discussions took place when students shared incidents from outside of class that served as examples to support the academic content. I invite students to bolster or counter my lessons by providing their personal insights and applications both during class time and as part of assigned group work. This is part of my overall goal to facilitate the flow and exchange of information so that learning is not unidirectional. I provide excerpts from popular culture science writing or recent news pieces and organize smaller discussions so that students are able to share information with me as the professor but also, more importantly, with each other in these less formal lesson periods. These sessions enhance cognitive flexibility in the students and solicit practice defending and explaining the material. I find these are the moments when it is particularly important for me to pay attention and learn from, as well as adapt to, the needs of my students.

Perfect! Kelly is wonderful! She is always prepared and teaches the material in a way that my daughter can internalize. And this is Life Sciences 7A at UCLA so it's not an easy course. We have been extremely happy with Kelly and have been working with her all semester!

David's child always sent questions/content in advance allowing me to prepare. This ensured each hour was very efficient. In addition, the student and I often learned from each other as we wrestled with harder/less familiar content making the sessions super enjoyable!
