About JEREMY

I hold a PhD (Biochemistry) from Otago, a Certificate in Adult Education, and have been a teaching-focused lecturer in the biological sciences for 22 years. I have taught a diverse range of students at institutions in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, the Middle East, and the Caribbean.

I accept that I am still learning as a teacher and there is always room for improvement and new skills. I am open to learning new techniques and new technologies to deliver teaching materials. I understand the need to make changes to my teaching practices based on student needs and I firmly believe engagement and inclusion is the key to effective learning.

It is essential that teaching material is up to date, relevant, engaging, easy to understand and that I know it thoroughly beforehand. I prefer to employ a consultative approach, taking in others’ views and experiences and weighing up the evidence carefully before making decisions related to teaching. Self-reflection and taking on board criticism in a constructive way, is the key to improved performance, and gives the flexibility to respond to needs as they arise.

In my many teaching roles around the world, I have always practiced tolerance, consideration and respect to all others regardless of their background, beliefs or culture. I consider this not only to be my ethical duty, but an essential part of being a professional and being the best teacher I can be.

I hold a PhD in Biochemistry (Otago) and I have been a teaching-focused lecturer in the biological sciences for 22 years. I have taught a diverse range of students at institutions in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. I specialize in teaching introductory biology from Level 1 NCEA up to first-year university level.

It is very important to me that my learners are engaged with the material. I feel my particular strength is being able to translate technical information into a form that is readily understood by a range of audiences, and this has been validated with positive feedback from peers and students.

Most of my teaching experience has been with small group and/or classroom-based teaching, including lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes and interacting with student presentations. My own PowerPoint presentations typically contain lists of learning objectives, case studies where appropriate, practice questions, videos, diagrams and summaries of key points. I think it is important to pause and ask students questions during the presentation to engage them with the topic. Sometimes I do "flipped classrooms" and play videos. A good length of time for a presentation is around 30 minutes.

I understand that different students have different learning preferences, and am a proponent of the VARK categories and the VARK questionnaire tool. Increasingly over the years I have incorporated more blended learning into my teaching, utilizing various online learning and digital platforms including Zoom, Canvas, Echo360 and ExamSoft.
