About Claire
I Graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a 2:1 in Painting and Printmaking this year,2018.
My degree show work has been shortlisted for the Aon Community Art Award and my work is currently showcased in the Leadenhall Building (The Cheesegrater).
My work was also selected for the group show ‘Best of Degree Show’ at Six Foot Gallery.
I am now a Glasgow based Artist - specialising in Oil Painting, Drawing, Etching and Screenprint.
When applying to Art school I was given unconditionals for Fine Art Photography, Visual Communication and Painting at Edinburgh,UAL and Glasgow.
I am fully aware of the broad and differing ranges of work Art schools are looking for between each course.

The duration and direction of our lessons together will depend on your current level of ability and expertise. We can discuss exactly what you would like to get out of your tutorials with an informal consultation so I can create a lesson plan specialised just for you.
In terms of portfolio preparation - my method of working is to tutor you alongside the college or school art course you are undertaking. I will help you to refine the details of your sketchbooks to specific courses and universities. I have access to Adobe Creative Cloud; with which we can design your boards for pre-entry UCAS applications as well as hone in on more graphical techniques like illustration, animation and photography. We will develop a body of work and finally refine all of this onto your final boards for interview. I can go through your portfolio boards for each interview and ensure the body of work suitably relates to the course in question. I have a firm grasp of the portfolio application process and would suggest a 6-8 week course of weekly tutorials. The process can be intense however I am here to guide you through it in a cool, calm and collected environment.
Drawing classes. For beginners, I recommend a 6-8 week block of lessons where we can cover a large ground of techniques and a substantial body of work. We will work mainly with graphite and charcoal using a collection of objects and imagery you are interested in. We will begin by learning light; shadow and shape in relation to the form of the object or composition. We will then move on to look at more technical approaches – looking at the tools that can help to perfect a drawing as well as scale; measuring and angles.
For more advanced drawers, we could work on specific areas you feel you struggle with ie – technical drawing; understanding values; creating form… I have a breadth of experience in technical and life drawing so can cater to all abilities. Also, if there is a piece of work you already have that you would like advice on or you would like me to work on with you I am more than happy to discuss a measured timescale and do one off tutorials for that instead of the 6-8 week block.
Painting classes. I specialise in oil and watercolour. Each has its own temperament and methodology so I would suggest a 6 - 8 week block of either oil or watercolour. For beginners, the basic structure would be the same for each medium. We would begin by going over and understanding values, colour theory and approach to underpainting and preparatory sketches. This will then develop in recurring weeks – working with your preferred imagery and compositions – to refine your painting technique.
In terms of oil painting we will go through and practice preparing canvas; working with wood-board and stretchers. You will also be introduced to the specific solutions and processes for painting with and cleaning your brushes. This will include learning the proper use for linseed oil, white spirit, varnishes and many other solutions involved in the process.
In terms of watercolour we will go through stretching paper, working with varying solutions to optimise you painting skill as well as practicing your approach to mixing and applying the paint.
This is quite a general overview and can be altered to what you feel you may need more help on.

Claire is an extremely hard working, dedicated tutor. I couldn’t recommend her enough, her talent and drive is second to none.
I have collaborated with claire as an artist as well as on community based projects. She has a wide knowledge base in fine art and interdisciplinary methods and would provide tuition across a breadth of practical and theoretical subjects. She also provides connections between fine art and wider knowledge, meaning she can work with any skill level - whether learning to draw for the first time, building a portfolio for art school or for professional development in working with a critically acclaimed artist. As an alumni of Glasgow school of art and having won awards and commissions from large bodies you can be sure to find yourself in good hands. I couldn't recommend her as a person or artist more.
Having collaborated with Claire on a number of projects over the past 4 years I can’t recommend her enough. Her professional, organised and most importantly personable approach to work is a real asset. Not only this, but she is highly skilled and dedicated to her own practice, I’ve learnt a lot from her.
Having known Claire since she undertook a portfolio course at Tramway Visual Arts Studio, throughout her time studying at Glasgow School of Art and knowing her as the artist she is today, I can confidently say that she is an adept tutor. She is familiar with the process of applying to art school and the structure of the Fine Art course/degree.
I studied with Claire at The Glasgow School of Art. She is a lovely person, both giving and kind. She is patient and helpful. I would highly recommend her as a teacher to anybody wanting to learn in a relaxed but constructive environment.
