About Ramona
I have been brought up in a multi-cultural family and as a result I have developed a passion for the study of languages. Out of the six languages which I can understand and speak, Spanish is my favourite. I would very much like to explore the Hispanic world, and be able to communicate fluently with Spanish speakers. I hope to be able to find job opportunities which will allow me to travel extensively, making practical use of my linguistic skills and I believe that my university studies could enable me to become a translator or an international business woman.
My mother tongues are Italian and Polish, which has afforded me a greater knowledge of European languages as Polish has Slavic roots and Italian is derived from Latin. I have lived in England since 2013 which has enabled me to also become fluent in English. I love languages because new vocabulary can constantly be discovered and I truly believe that mastery of a different tongue can open the door into other worlds. The difference between languages fascinates me, particularly when they have a different alphabet. I would love to study Russian as it would enable me to gain knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet, giving my studies a whole new dimension.
I have studied Modern Foreign Languages since Year 9, achieving A* in both French and Spanish. As Italian is my first language, I also achieved an A* in Italian in Year 10. During Year 10 I had an amazing opportunity; I was invited to be a language ambassador by a local Primary School. I worked in a team made up of people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, from Polish to Indian, preparing a day of activities for younger students linked to different cultures. I found this experience extremely rewarding as I was able to work within a culturally diverse team, delivering a programme that promoted diversity.
I am continuing to study both Spanish and French for A Level. As part of my studies I have embarked upon individual research projects which allow me to explore a topic of my choosing in greater depth. For Spanish I have chosen "La Mafia Columbiana" and for French the novel "Le Petit Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I am enjoying the independent aspect of this part of the course which is a good precursor for university studies.
Currently, I am studying a beautiful French book: "L'Etranger" is written by Albert Camus and I have enjoyed it since I read the title because the narrator considers himself a foreigner in every situation. This made me think that every person in this world is not of a 'pure' nationality because nowadays our lives are influenced by different factors, from German cars, to the Italian pizza, from Arabic numbers to the Latin writings.
In my first year of sixth form, we have analysed two films: "La Haine" for French and "El laberinto Del Fauno" for Spanish. I loved the themes present in the French film because it faces current social issues, for example discrimination, social exclusion and poverty. While, in the Spanish film, the most beautiful thing to see was how Ofelia created her own world with imagination in order to escape from the brutal reality during the times of Franco in power.
Being an enthusiastic person, my extra-curricular experiences have used my knowledge of languages: I was a 'language ambassador' for a Primary School. My job was to create activities regarding different cultures for children and thanks to this opportunity, I understood that languages are a part of me because it was fantastic to see less hate for race or religion, in contrary of today's reality.
I feel that all forms of communication play an important role globally because language has the power to connect two different societies. In a world that is constantly changing and possibly becoming more precarious, we will need more communicators. My intention to study languages stems from my passion for learning more about different cultures and my desire to use my skills to bring people closer together.
