About Alan

I have been playing my toddler sized drum set since the age of 2, and started picking up formal percussion during 7th grade. I have played for countless groups including symphonic bands, wind ensembles, percussion only ensembles, jazz bands, marching bands, pit orchestras, district bands, and Virginia state bands. When I started out, I had no idea how to read music and was pathetically behind my peers; I even had to pay for an app to tell me which notes where which to play the vibraphone! Once I hit high school, I joined our drumline which had a tight knit community that brought up one another in our playing abilities. By my senior year, I had learned multiple books from world class drum corps such as Carolina Crown, performed 8 minute long marimba duets, played for a local math rock cover band, and made all-state band.

Now in college I continue to play for our marching band, concert band, and jazz band acting as the Percussion Captain last year and Assistant Drum Major this year. I have spent most of my time in college bands passing on my knowledge to my peers and subordinates rather than performing. Teaching has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life thus far, and I can't wait for my next opportunity!

About the lesson

When I teach percussion, I find it's most important to watch my students from before they even strike the drum. Getting better at drumming is a mental game that requires intense focus, and that focus can be lost easily if you don't know what you're doing. Without someone to keep me on track or hold me accountable all these years, I wouldn't have been able to become to percussionist I am today.

My lessons are for anyone who is looking to seriously elevate their percussion game, whether that be on mallet percussion, concert percussion, marching percussion, or any style of drum kit. A typical lesson plan will always start with a proper stretch and ample warmup, and try to focus on one or two seemingly small skills for the duration of the lesson. While it may seem unnecessary to harp on the basics too much, you'll find that the top performing percussion groups never abandon those basics and use them as exercises regularly. I don't like to have too strict of a plan, however, because a lack of fluidity in the world of music leads you down a bad path.
