About Laura

Hello! My name is Laura, and I am a passionate and dedicated educator with over 8 years of experience working with young children. I hold a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Studies, giving me a strong foundation in child development, learning strategies, and creating engaging educational experiences. Throughout my career as a registered Early Childhood Educator, I have worked in both elementary schools and daycare settings, supporting children from infancy to Grades 1/2. This diverse experience has given me valuable insight into how children learn best at different developmental stages. I specialize in teaching basic letter recognition, phonics, reading, and writing skills to young learners (ages 4-6), using fun, interactive, and engaging methods that foster a love for learning. I pride myself on being professional, patient, caring, and empathetic, always creating a warm and encouraging environment where children feel comfortable to express themselves and grow. I understand that every child is unique, and I tailor my lessons to suit their individual needs, making learning both enjoyable and effective. My positive attitude and dedication ensure that each session is structured, meaningful, and engaging. Outside of teaching, I love music and singing, and I often incorporate music into my lessons to make learning more interactive. About the lesson

As a tutor, I use a child-friendly, interactive, and structured approach to teach basic English, phonics, reading, and writing skills to children between the ages of 4-6 yrs old.

My methodology includes:
~ Play-Based Learning – I incorporate songs, games, and storytelling to make learning fun and engaging.
~ Phonics-Based Reading Instruction – I teach letter sounds and sight words to build early reading skills.
~ Multi-Sensory Techniques – I use visuals, music, and movement-based learning to keep children engaged.
~ Encouraging Verbal Communication – I create opportunities for children to speak in English through conversation, role-playing, and interactive stories.
~ Building Fine Motor Skills for Writing – I introduce tracing, letter formation, and fun exercises to develop early writing abilities.
~ Positive Reinforcement – I use praise and encouragement to boost confidence and motivation.

What a typical session could look like (this will be dependent on the needs and main literary focus for the student and may vary with each session) (first sessions would run at a slower, more introductory pace):
- Warm-Up & Greetings (5-10 minutes); Sing a welcome song or do a fun icebreaker; Briefly review previously learned words or concepts.
- Phonics & Vocabulary (15-20 minutes); Introduce or review letter sounds and simple words; Use flashcards, songs, and interactive games.
- Reading Activity (15-20 minutes); Read a short story together; Engage student with questions, predictions, and role-play.
- Writing Practice (10-15 minutes); Practice tracing letters, writing simple words, or drawing to express ideas; Use fun worksheets or hands-on activities like finger tracing.
- Closing & Review (5 minutes); Summarize what was learned; Assign a simple activity (e.g., finding words around the house); End with a goodbye song or a fun challenge for the next lesson.
