About Austin
During my time in the Teaching Preparatory Program at the University of Alaska, Southeast, I was also employed as a full-time band and choir teacher in Delta Junction High School and Delta Junction Middle School in Alaska. Because this school district served a diverse population I gained firsthand experience in differentiation, scaffolding, and MTSS strategies to meet the unique strengths, backgrounds, readiness and learning styles of each student.
In the two years I spent teaching in Delta, I crafted a music program I was proud of, placing in the regional choir competition and having many students compete in the state solo and ensemble competitions both in voice and on instruments.
My most recent position was a teacher at Machetanz Elementary School in Wasilla, Alaska as well as serving as an adjunct professor of private voice and a pep band director for the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Both positions have challenged me to adapt to the needs of a diverse range of students as well as vastly different stages of a student’s musical journey. Some of my greatest professional accomplishments include:
Developing a system of classroom management that pushes students to strive for excellence while also challenging students to make the best choice for the situation presented to them in a fun environment.
Rebuilt my school’s choir program with a focus on blend, expression and musicianship which led to a third place finish in the regional choir competition as well as creating more opportunities for students to share their talents with the community through caroling and performing at multiple events.
Getting selected to be the 2026 Elementary Honor Music Festival Choir Director for my district, where I created practice tracks to help all elementary choir students utilize technology to learn their music more efficiently.
