You as the pupil are the key to how I deliver my tuition. My lessons will work around your interests and learning styles. The first thing I will do is to establish your goals and needs, and work together to create a plan to achieve this.
I adore science, and while I know not everyone does, I really believe that learning should be fun where possible, and have always incorporated this into my teaching. While sometimes plain old hard work is required, it has always been important to me to incorporate fun activities into learning.
My main focus in tutoring is science. I obtained 3A*s in my GCSE sciences, and As in A Level Chemistry and Biology. I studied Human Sciences at Oxford University. I currently work in genetics and am working towards my MSc Clinical Sciences (Genomic Sciences) as part of the program I am on. I can provide insight into how science really can apply to everyday life, which helps when planning lessons.
I also studied English Literature at A Level, and Maths to AS level. I would still be happy to tutor in these subjects up to GCSE, particularly if students found my science tuition style worked well for them, and also desired support in these areas.
I have tutored in the past during my time in secondary and further education, but since leaving school have not had the same opportunity to do so formally.
However when I have had the opportunity to teach in any capacity I have taken this, for example as a subject mentor on the UNIQ summer school for A Level students with an interest in studying at Oxford. I recently volunteered to run a workshop all about genetics at the Centre for Life in Newcastle.
Like most people, I have not always found learning easy, and feel that my ability to relate when a student is struggling is beneficial to tutoring. Being able to understand the frustration, and know how to work around this, is key to tackling those tricky subjects.
