About Erin

Hi, I'm Erin! I've been teaching for over 20 years, working with students both internationally and here in Ontario, and for the past 8 years I've specialized in Orton-Gillingham tutoring, helping K-12 students build real, lasting confidence in reading, spelling, and writing.

My path to this work runs deep. I have a background in psychology, with a specific focus on learning and childhood disorders, which shapes the way I understand and support every student I work with. Over the years, I've worked as a school counselor and as a special education teacher, experience that's given me a well-rounded understanding of how children learn, where they struggle, and what actually helps. That combination of psychology, counseling, special education, and structured literacy training is what sets my approach apart.

I specialize in structured literacy, which means my lessons aren't guesswork. Each one follows a proven, multisensory approach designed specifically for students who learn differently, including those with dyslexia or other language-based learning differences. Parents and students consistently tell me that what stands out most is the structure and consistency they can count on. Every lesson builds on the last, so progress is steady, visible, and something the whole family can feel good about.

I've had the privilege of working with families across Ontario, often alongside SLPs, psychologists, and assessment centers, to make sure tutoring genuinely supports a student's broader learning plan. All of my sessions are one-on-one and fully virtual, which means your child gets my complete, undivided attention every session, no commute, no distractions, no wasted time. Just focused, personalized instruction from wherever you are.

Whether your child is just starting to build their phonics foundation or has been struggling for years and needs a fresh, structured approach, I'd love to help them discover that reading and writing don't have to be a source of stress. I look forward to working with you and your child!

I'm Orton-Gillingham (OG) trained, which means my lessons follow a structured, multisensory approach to literacy, one built specifically for how struggling readers and students with dyslexia actually learn. Rather than following a rigid, one-size-fits-all program, I've developed my own scope and sequence based on OG principles, which lets me move at the pace each student needs rather than a preset pace. Every lesson combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements so students are seeing, hearing, and physically engaging with the sounds and patterns they're learning, which builds stronger, longer-lasting connections than reading or worksheets alone.

A Typical Lesson

Each lesson follows a consistent, predictable structure that helps students feel confident and know what to expect:

Introduction of a new concept or phonics pattern
Review of previously learned words and patterns
Morphology work (prefixes, suffixes, roots)
Word chart practice with both real and nonsense words, to test true pattern recognition rather than memorization
Phrases and sentences using the target pattern
A reading passage with comprehension and vocabulary questions
A spelling list with dictation sentences
A short writing prompt to apply the skill in context

Lessons are entirely virtual and built around colorful, dyslexia-friendly visual materials designed to keep students engaged and reduce cognitive overload.

What Sets Me Apart

Genuine OG training sets my approach apart from a generic tutoring method, since my background is specifically in structured literacy for dyslexic and struggling readers. I also treat the fully virtual format as a strength rather than a compromise: no commute means more energy for the actual lesson, real-time screen sharing lets us work through material together seamlessly, and the one-on-one virtual setting removes classroom distractions that a lot of kids struggle to filter out. Every student also receives custom-built materials rather than generic workbook pages, designed around their specific gaps and goals. Finally, I keep a consistent structure every session, so students and parents always know what to expect and can track real progress over time.

Who These Lessons Are For

I work with K-12 students, from early phonics foundations right through high school-level literacy support. My focus is especially strong for students with dyslexia or diagnosed reading and language-based learning differences, early readers needing solid phonics foundations, students who've fallen behind in reading, spelling, or writing and need structured, one-on-one intervention, and families working with SLPs, psychologists, or assessment centers who want tutoring that complements a diagnosis or IEP.
