About SYAFIQ FALIQ
Nurtured during his days at Petronas University of Technology (UTP), Perak from 2007-2011, Sefa constantly received knowledge by participating in theatre shows through his mentor, Dr. Shark, the advisor of the Tronoh Theatre Shop (TTS) theatre club. It was during these formidable years that he developed his own style and interest in Mime, taught by his mentor and body performance through immediate participation in the early years of Projek Rabak. Triggered and fueled by his passion in the arts, he began performing on the streets of Ipoh, Perak and small scale shows such as Lorong Seni at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Building, Putrajaya (curated by Frinjan) during the Youth Day Festival 2010 and Plore Skala 2 by Paradoks Production at Central Market, Kuala Lumpur (2010). He has not looked back since.
Sefa can be considered as an outsider artist as his knowledge about mime (specifically Corporeal Mime) was derived through books written by Etienne Decroux and Thomas Leabhart, watching videos of classic performances by Decroux and his collaborators at Boulogne-Billancourt in Paris. He believes that even though without proper training at an academy or institution, one can still perform with enough attention, hard work and determination. From then on, he developed his skills in improvise acting through monologue performances and eventually incorporated them in the bodily work as he believes that the Southeast Asian oral tradition is a unique feature that should be re-interpreted and incorporated in a modern performativity context. As such, he is open to a wide range of possibility performance and often finds himself in the middle of multi-disciplinary projects with his fellow Projek Rabak members and Space Gambus Experiment. Apart than that, among his ‘misadventures’ include writing three books; Novel Eksperimental (Rabak-Lit, 2013), Melankolia Bisu (Rabak-Lit, 2014) and ‘Wayang Topeng Pedalangan: Body Movements of Selected Characters in Jatipitutur Pituturjati’ (Unpublished MA Thesis, 2015). Aside from performing, he also delivered mime workshops all over Malaysia including at academic institutions such as Mara University of Technology (UiTM, Shah Alam, Selangor) and Sultan Idris University of Education (UPSI, Tanjung Malim, Perak).
Art is a process. In order to achieve a better understanding about performance and performing, he joined acting workshops that ranged from different kinds of performances. Among his teachers were Marco Lully from Commedia Dell’arte workshop, Hilary Chaplain of Physical Comedy workshop and Soichiro Hayashi and Hiroyuki Matsuno of Kanze School, Kyoto, Japan from the Noh workshop.
In Spring 2018, Sefa was awarded the Monbukagakusho: MEXT scholarship by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship Programme. Under the auspices of MEXT, he is currently pursuing his study as a PhD Candidate at the Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Hiroshima University, Japan. He aims to graduate by Spring of 2021. His research area is on traditional performing arts, specifically Noh and Makyong.
Sefa is a proud member of the Projek Rabak art collective and thinks that keropok ikan should be a global cultural phenomenon.

We will begin with the basics of traditional pantomime covering the concept of 'weight and counterweight' which is essence in mime performance. We will then slowly move towards other skills such as walking, running, climbing ladders, going up the stairs, etc. Should the students would like to try another interesting type of mime called corporeal mime, we can expand the class or explore together.
By the end of the first 5 hours of lessons, we will begin to discuss on how to create your first mime piece. I will fit my lessons to the level of students participating in the class whether it is an advance drama/acting school students or total beginner.
