About James

After having graduated from the University of Oxford in 2008 with a BA (Hons) in Archaeology and Anthropology, I promptly began tutoring, keen to pass on my love of learning. I have been tutoring for over 13 years, and have completed over 10,000 hours of tuition. My students regularly gain places at top schools, including, but not limited to: Eton, Westminster, St Paul's, Godolphin & Latymer, Latymer Upper, City of London, North London Collegiate, JAGS and Dulwich College.

About the lesson

With over 20 years of tuition experience, I have privately tutored several hundred students in English, maths and reasoning, across a variety of levels from the ages of 6 - 50, as well as having taught key stages 3 and 4 English within a school school. I primarily prepare students for 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance, ISEB pre-tests and GCSE in English and maths, as well as verbal and non-verbal reasoning for relevant assessments.

I am passionate about building confidence for students who are concerned that they are not at the level they should be. I find that once a student finds enjoyment and reduces self-judgement when errors arise within their work, their progress is far quicker, and they find a previously hidden pride in their approach to learning that subsequently lifts results across the board.

I believe that students should be encouraged to become independent in their learning so that they are able to problem solve with minimal assistance, or indeed, eventually, no help whatsoever. All lessons take place on Zoom, during which I share documents (whether these be worksheets or photographs of completed homework), and annotate relevant key points for my students to make note of in their exercise books. Students share the ability to annotate where helpful during the class.

I use a selection of comprehensive resources, specific to the subject matter and level, that cover all required topics. Online exercises on sites such as Atom Learning (in preparation for ISEB Pre-Tests) can be completed either in real-time, using the screen sharing tool so that I can monitor a student's thought process, or for homework, where I can follow their progress.
