About Nigel
I’ve been teaching the violin for over 40 years, and I still love helping students discover the joy, confidence and creativity that music can bring. My approach is warm, patient and encouraging, and I aim to make lessons enjoyable and inspiring for players of all ages and abilities.
I was fortunate to study with distinguished musicians including Emanuel Hurwitz, Yfrah Neaman, Denis Matthews and Hans Keller. I began teaching while assisting my first teacher, Eta Cohen, in Leeds, and since then I have worked with young musicians across London and beyond.
Over the years I have taught and led music programmes at institutions including Watford School of Music, Highgate School, The Latymer School, Young Music Makers and the Youth Music Centre, where I was Artistic Director for 21 years. I am currently a visiting violin professor at Middlesex University and also teach at the Junior Guildhall School of Music.
Alongside teaching, I have enjoyed a varied performing career with orchestras including the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Mozart Players and the National Philharmonic Orchestra. I have also performed extensively in London’s West End, leading the orchestra for productions such as Miss Saigon and The Witches of Eastwick. As a recitalist and director, I have performed throughout the UK, Europe and America.

I am passionate about making music accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Inspired by my students, I composed Sounds of a Rainbow and Three Concertinos for Young Violinists, published by Stainer & Bell, to help young players explore music with confidence and imagination.
Whether you are a complete beginner, preparing for exams, or returning to the violin after a break, I offer supportive, tailored lessons designed to help you enjoy your playing and grow in confidence. I am always happy to have a friendly chat about your musical goals and how I can help you achieve them.

Nigel was my violin teacher at Middlesex university. He is very patient and always made me feel confident at the end of every lesson. In just under a year I could see myself improving significantly. I also successfully completed my grade 8 violin under his guidance. My teachers and my peers noticed that my skills were vastly improved. Nigel and his wife are very kind and caring. Our lessons were so wholesome. They were humorous and at the same time filled with meaningful conversations. He is truly the best teacher I had. He is so inspiring! He helped me reach my full potential.
Nigel has taught my daughter violin for the last 5 years and I have no hesitation in recommending him.
He is incredibly experienced and equally adept at developing the skills of talented, motivated young musicians as well as those like my daughter who arrived to him with some bad habits in need of fixing and no real understanding of what making good music entailed.
He has been incredibly patient and dedicated to truly getting the best out of my daughter and she has made great progress under him.
Nigel has a unique combination of outstanding musicianship, humour and life wisdom which he has used not just to teach the violin, but to really help my daughter develop her approach to a life of learning across all domains, something special that she has been very lucky to have.
Nigel taught my daughter violin from Grade 3 all the way through to Grade 8, and we could not have asked for a better teacher.
He is caring, dedicated, and genuinely wants the very best for his students. What I particularly appreciated was his honesty and consistency. He was always generous with praise when it was deserved, but equally willing to give a gentle but firm reminder when practice had been neglected.
Teachers like Nigel are increasingly rare. He doesn't just teach music; he helps shape character, resilience, discipline, and a strong work ethic.
If those are values that matter to you too, I would wholeheartedly recommend Nigel. He has made a lasting impact on my daughter's life, and for that I will always be grateful.Nigel is an experienced teacher in violin and viola. He was the teacher for my son for both instruments and took him to diploma level on violin. He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and he is good with students of all ages and levels of experience. He is also a conductor of his own orchestra - the Goldberg Chamber Orchestra. I can recommend Nigel for anyone wishing to learn violin or viola
I’ve known Nigel as a professional colleague for over 20 years and honestly could not recommend him more highly .
He is both a highly skilled teacher and performer, but also has a brilliant way of making his lessons both fun and inspiring.
He also gets great results .
I have known Nigel for over 10 years, he taught my twins from when they were six years all the way to grade 8, Nigel is an amazing teacher, incredibly hard working, cares for his students, goes the extra mile, never watches the clock and will stay connected to his students even on holidays with exams, practice etc.. he helped my twins with worldly wisdom too beyond the music too. He had influenced my twins beyond music. Grateful to have had him teach my twins.
