1) The first step is to assess a student's current level of proficiency. I usually achieve this via a mock DELE exam in the case of more advanced students, or simply a conversation in the case of beginning students.
2) From this point, the methodology will vary according to the level.
In general terms, for beginners I like to cement very firm grammatical foundations, and frequently practice these, until they become second-nature.
For intermediate students my focus includes rapid expansion of functional vocabulary, and practicing communicating ideas spontaneously, as well as demanding nuanced interpretation and translation of texts aimed at this level.
Advanced students should aim towards acquisition of understanding nuanced grammatical features of the language as well as expansion of vocabulary well beyond the core vocabulary, familiarizing oneself with technical and situation-specific terms.
