About Yu

Hi, I’m Yumie, a native Mandarin tutor based in London. I hold a PSC Level 2-A Mandarin Proficiency Certificate, demonstrating clear and standard Mandarin pronunciation.

I have taught children and adults from a wide range of ages, cultures and language levels. My younger students have ranged from ages 2 to 11, learning through stories, drawing, games and structured YCT materials. I also work with adult learners who want to improve their pronunciation, build confidence in conversation, or understand how Chinese is naturally used in everyday life.

My background is in UX, design and cultural projects. This helps me turn complex language concepts into clear, visual and memorable learning experiences. I grew up practising Chinese calligraphy, was named Best Debater in a university competition, and worked as a student journalist with several published articles. These experiences shaped my love of language—not only as a way to communicate, but also as a way to understand people, culture and different ways of thinking.

I help children and adults experience Mandarin through real conversations, visual thinking, stories and contemporary Chinese culture—so the language becomes something they can see, feel and actually use.

I believe Mandarin should feel alive rather than limited to a textbook. I would love to help you experience Chinese through real conversations, visual thinking, stories and culture—and gradually make the language your own.

About the lesson

My lessons are personalised, engaging and practical, but never random. We will begin by discussing your goals, interests and current level, and then build a clear learning direction that works for you.

For adult learners, lessons can focus on:

• Clear pronunciation and natural tones
• Practical Mandarin for everyday life, travel and relationships
• Real conversations and expressions used by native speakers
• Listening, reading and character recognition
• Chinese culture, stories, poetry and contemporary life
• Building confidence to express your own ideas in Mandarin

Rather than simply memorising vocabulary, we explore how Chinese works in context. In one lesson, we might practise ordering food through role-play; in another, we might study a real conversation, unpack the visual logic of a character, discuss a Chinese myth, or explore the meaning behind an everyday expression.

For children, I use age-appropriate stories, drawing, movement, games and visual materials to make Mandarin accessible and enjoyable. Depending on the child’s age and goals, lessons may include speaking and listening, phonics and tones, character recognition, writing, cultural activities or structured YCT learning.

In one lesson, we might explore how Chinese people introduce themselves through clips from real conversations. In another, we might unpack a character through its visual components, tell the story behind a Chinese festival, discuss a poem, or practise ordering food through role-play.

My background in design helps me explain Chinese visually. Characters can become pictures, vocabulary can work like building blocks, and difficult ideas can be broken down into simple, memorable steps.

Each lesson has a clear focus, and I provide practical feedback so you understand what you have learned and what to practise next. Whether you prefer relaxed cultural exploration or a more structured learning plan, I will adapt the lessons while keeping your progress visible.

The aim is not only to “know” more Chinese, but to understand it, remember it and feel confident using it.
