About Justin

Hi everyone, I’m Justin! I was born and raised in Shanghai, China, and I’ve been living in Canada for the past 12 years.

I started tutoring Mandarin part-time back in university, mostly because I really enjoyed teaching and sharing the language and culture. Over the past 10+ years, I’ve worked with students at all different levels, from complete beginners to advanced learners who want to sound more natural, improve their pronunciation, or just feel more confident speaking Chinese.

Outside of teaching, I have a background in law and currently work in the insurance industry. I’m also a bit of a language nerd myself. Mandarin and Shanghainese are my native languages, I speak near-native English, and I’ve also reached B2 level in French through self-study and immersion. Learning languages myself has definitely helped me understand what students struggle with and what actually helps things stick.

I like to keep lessons practical, relaxed, and personalized. Everyone learns differently, so I try to adapt to your goals, interests, and learning style rather than teach everything the exact same way.

About the lesson

My lessons are suitable for all ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced learners. I can teach Mandarin in English for daily conversation, travel, work, business, school, or simply for those interested in Chinese culture and social media.

Lessons can be structured with textbooks to build grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and pronunciation, or based on your interests through Chinese songs, TV shows, short videos, trending topics, and social media.

Conversation is one of my main focuses. Having moved from China to Canada myself, I understand the challenges of learning and using a new language in real life. I can help with pronunciation, natural expressions, word choice, role-plays, interview practice, and personalized homework such as shadowing or recorded speaking exercises.

I also teach Shanghainese, my first language, for learners who want to better understand Shanghai’s local culture or communicate more naturally with local speakers.
