About Essie

Hi! I'm a full-time Mandarin Chinese teacher with a master's degree and over 5 years of teaching experience.

Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a designer. Today, I help adult learners from around the world build confidence through real Chinese conversations. I've taught 70+ students from Canada, the UK, Switzerland, South Africa, Ireland, Russia, and many other countries.

Every student has a different reason for learning Chinese. I'll help you build a learning plan that fits you.

My goal isn't just to teach Chinese. It's to help you use Chinese confidently in real life.

About the lesson

After teaching 70+ students, I see the same issue: many read and pass HSK well, but freeze when speaking. In my experience, it usually because they've spent much more time studying Chinese than using it.

That's why we spend most of our class speaking. From the very first lesson, you'll be using Chinese through conversation. We'll ask and answer questions, describe pictures, role-play real-life situations, and talk about topics that matter to you.

If you're a beginner, don't worry. We can start with simple sentences and build from there. In my lessons, taking notes isn't required. Speaking is. You don't have to spend the lesson writing everything down. I'll take care of the notes. Your only job is to keep speaking.

I don't use exactly the same materials with every student. After each lesson, I'll send you personalised notes and audio recordings, so you can review everything whenever it's convenient for you.

Most of my lessons are based on situations you'll actually experience in China, for example:

Ordering coffee
Taking the high-speed train
Checking into a hotel
Ordering food
Talking about football and hobbies
️ Travelling in China
Workplace conversations

Of course, if you're interested in something else, we can learn through that too. I don't believe one textbook works for everyone. I believe people learn faster when they're talking about things they genuinely care about.

The more you speak, the more natural Chinese becomes， you will feel more confident after every lesson.
