About Vicki
Hi,
I’m Vicki, a friendly, patient and approachable tutor with a genuine passion for helping people learn and develop their confidence. I have a First Class BSc (Hons) in Applied Zoology and an MSc in Primate Conservation, giving me a strong academic background in biology and science. I also hold an Advanced Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and have previous experience teaching English to international students, as well as supporting university students with additional learning needs.
I believe that every student is different, so I take a personalised and flexible approach to teaching. I adapt my lessons to suit each student's age, ability, learning style and individual goals. Whether they want to improve their reading and writing, develop their English skills, or simply become more confident in conversational English, I tailor my lessons to help them achieve their goals.
I particularly enjoy helping children who may need a little extra patience and encouragement. I have experience supporting a Year 5 pupil with ADHD, autism and dyslexia, helping with reading and spelling through engaging, manageable activities and positive reinforcement.
Outside of teaching, I am a professional artist and have a great love of animals. I am creative, hardworking and always looking for ways to make learning interesting, enjoyable and rewarding. My aim is for every student to finish a lesson feeling more confident, having learned something new and feeling proud of their progress.

- MSc in Primate Conservation (2:1) from Oxford Brookes University.

My techniques and teaching methodology:
My approach to teaching English as a foreign language is friendly, patient and personalised to each student's individual needs and goals. I believe students learn best when they feel relaxed and confident, so I create a supportive environment where they can practise English without worrying about making mistakes. I focus on developing all aspects of communication, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, while making lessons practical and engaging. I adapt my lessons to suit different abilities and learning styles, with particular attention to spoken English, pronunciation and building confidence in everyday conversations. I like to use real-life situations, conversation practice, questions, reading activities and structured exercises to make lessons relevant and enjoyable. I also encourage students to take an active role in their learning and work at a pace that suits them, helping them gradually become more confident and independent English speakers.
Typical Lesson Length:
I am happy to offer 60 minute lessons, which provides enough time to introduce a topic, explain the key concepts, practise questions and finish with a recap of what has been learned. I can shorten/lengthen the lesson length where appropriate depending on the student's age, concentration level and individual requirements.
My Experience:
I have 2 years experience teaching English to Spanish students in person (1:1 and in small groups) while living in Gran Canaria, where I planned lessons and adapted my teaching approach to individual learners. I have carried on that methodology to the students I now teach online which include students in Spain and Luxembourg.
I have previous experience supporting university students as a Student Enabler with Claro Learning at Plymouth University, including students (aged 18 - 40) with additional learning needs such as dyslexia and autism. I took detailed lecture notes, typing and organising information, providing general academic support and adapting my tutoring approach to meet the individual students' needs. This experience taught me the importance of patience, clear communication and understanding that different students learn in different ways.
I am currently supporting a Year 5 student (aged 9) with ADHD, autism and dyslexia, helping him to develop his reading and spelling skills and helping with homework. I take a patient, calm and encouraging approach, adapting activities to suit his individual needs and concentration levels. I use short, manageable activities, repetition, phonics, reading practice and engaging resources to help maintain his focus and make learning enjoyable. I understand that children with additional needs can learn in different ways, so I am flexible in my approach and willing to adapt lessons depending on how the student is responding on the day.
Who my lessons are for (level, age, send students etc)
My lessons are open to **students of all ages and abilities**, from complete beginners who are just starting to learn English to more advanced students looking to improve their fluency, grammar, pronunciation or confidence. I am happy to teach children, teenagers and adults, and I can adapt lessons to suit each student's age, level, learning style and individual goals. I particularly welcome students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and have previous experience supporting students with additional learning needs, including dyslexia, ADHD and autism. I believe every student deserves a patient, encouraging and understanding learning environment, and I will adapt my teaching methods and resources to help each learner feel comfortable, supported and able to make progress.
