About Marissa
I am a native English speaker from New Zealand, who has lived and worked in Spain and the Netherlands and is currently in Canada.
I've always loved languages, and have experience in teaching English, Spanish and Dutch using many different methods.
I'm familiar with the Cambridge English exams and the CEFR scale for language proficiency in Europe. But more importantly, I aim for practical fluency. I strongly believe that being able to express yourself and get by in daily life is more important than having perfect grammar and a full vocabulary.
Trust me when I say that you don't have to be perfect!
I'm passionate about creating an accepting environment to learn, and one where there is no shame in making mistakes.

Apart from English, I speak Spanish, Dutch and Italian, so I understand the difficulties of learning a new language, and want to make it as easy and rewarding as possible.
I like to design individual lessons based on your needs as a student. I emphasize as much speaking and writing as possible, because I believe the best way to learn is to immerse yourself fully.
Working together with the student, we decide on our goals, our current challenges, and interests to make the lessons relatable and fun!
Each lesson has a specific purpose, such as working on vocabulary, grammar, or a practice test. As a student, you are encouraged to speak and write as much as possible in every lesson, to help you develop practical fluency!
These lessons are ideal for middle-high school students who are studying for an advanced certification or who are looking for real proficiency in English.
