About Daniel
I'm Daniel, and I'm American. I grew up speaking English and Spanish, which means I know from the inside what it's like to move between two languages and why certain things in English stay difficult long after you've stopped being a beginner.
I studied Biology at James Madison University in Virginia, then took a master's in International Environmental Law at the University of Stirling in Scotland. I'm now doing a second master's in sustainability at ICTA-UAB, here in Barcelona. Studying in three countries has meant writing in English under real pressure — dissertations, applications, and work that got marked by people who didn't grade generously.
Professionally, I worked in environmental strategy consulting at ERM and on projects supporting the UN Environment Programme, so I've written and spoken English in the settings my students are usually preparing for: interviews, reports, meetings with people who matter. I currently work as a college admissions and essay coach, which is close, careful work on other people's writing.
I've also coached youth rowing for years. That's where I learned to teach — patiently, one person at a time, and without pretending progress is faster than it is.
I'm relaxed to work with but I'm honest. If something isn't working I'll say so, and if you're closer to your goal than you think, I'll say that too.

My lessons are built around your material, not a textbook. Bring me the job description you're applying for, the report you have to write, the email you've been putting off, or the paper you're reading — and we work on that. If you don't have anything yet, I'll bring something suited to what you're aiming at.
A typical session runs about the same way each time. We start with ten minutes of talking in English so I can hear where you actually are that day, not where you were last month. Then we spend the main part of the hour on one thing: a mock interview and feedback, a piece of your writing, or a text we read closely together. We finish by picking two or three specific things for you to work on before we meet again. After the lesson I send you written notes, including the corrections we didn't have time to cover.
I keep a running record of the mistakes each student makes repeatedly. Most people have five or six habits that account for most of their errors, and fixing those is far more useful than correcting everything once and moving on.
Who these lessons are for: adults. Professionals preparing for interviews in English, people who need to write clearly at work, postgraduate students and researchers writing in English, and anyone at intermediate level or above who wants to speak with more confidence. I don't teach beginners and I don't teach children — I'd rather send you to someone better suited than do it badly.
What's different about me: I'm a native speaker from the US with a science degree and a law master's, so I'm comfortable with technical and academic English, and I've spent years coaching, which means I'm used to working out what one particular person is stuck on rather than teaching a fixed syllabus. I'll tell you honestly how far you are from your goal.
The first lesson is free and I use it as a diagnostic — you'll leave with a plan whether or not you book again.
