About Tara

Welcome to my page. I’m Tara! As a half American half Taiwanese growing up in Taiwan, my native language is both Mandarin and English. Growing up in two very different languages and culture truly helped me better understand the world, and have deep appreciation for culture differences. I also understand how language can impact one’s life. It has made me more independent and confident, encouraging my travels through many countries and providing opportunities to facilitate and educate both with Taiwanese and with friends from North America, Europe, and elsewhere. I have combined my own bilingual journey with my lived cultural experience in Taiwan to create techniques and methods that help my students overcome their language-learning fears, accept mistakes as a natural part of the process, discover their advantage in learning a second language, and make the language-learning process engaging and enjoyable. A critical realisation in my language teaching career was the teaching the importance of context, familiarising phrases and sentences over relying on translation and memorising individual words. With this insight, coupled with my educational pursuit in getting both TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) certificates has allowed me to compare both similarities and differences between Chinese and English teachings. However, my interest goes beyond teaching languages. My passion for art has fostered since childhood and throughout my studies in material arts and design. I’ve love creating sculptures pieces through numerous materials. I’m convinced by integrating art into language teaching will transform the education experience for students. Making learning not just about words and grammar but a place to express creativity and cultural appreciation.

About the lesson

I am a bilingual language teacher. I teach both Chinese and English to students from diverse backgrounds, age and levels. Due to my personal teaching experiences from both languages. I find a notable challenge commonly faced by English speakers: The grammatical flexibility in Chinese makes it difficult to learn through a traditional grammar concept. The logical patterns and orders are what makes Chinese unique (but at the same time pain in the arse). The ability to guess and make new vocabularies simply by forming creative combinations is what I want students will take away from my classes. I approach teaching through emphasising practical, situational scenarios and theme-based games. It helps my students in realising the structural pattern of languages and make learning fun and enjoyable. My students range from 5-75 years old. Each student will receive their own set of unique learning materials. I tailor each student's learning experience to align with their individual goals, interests, and progress trajectory. Class Materials will include: Powerpoints, Class reading and writing documents, immersive games and Homework practices.
