About John
I have worked with a wide range of students who represent all types of backgrounds.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, I believe in a teaching style that promotes positivity. I will teach you how to create and achieve your own personal goals, and I will be there to keep you on the right track and help you with any technical details that are keeping you from achieving your goals.
I have had teachers who use less than ideal teaching methods, including yelling, shaming, comparing two different students who aren't at the same level, and who have a general lack of respect for who they are supposed to be helping. I can assure you that I am not that type of teacher, and it will always be my goal to inspire confidence and happiness for your own musicianship.

My specialty is developing your technique as well as developing effective practice habits. I have worked with complete beginners as well as advanced students, so no matter what your skill level is, I can help you raise your personal standards and become the best musician you can be! I will teach you how to analyze your own playing, and how to optimize your technique in order to make the most difficult things as easy as physically possible.
I have personally learned from and played with some of the best drummers/percussionists/music educators alive today, including Bill Bachman, Kennan Wylie, Lauren Teel, Steven Schick, and many more.
My main expertise is in general stick technique with two sticks and a surface, which is incredibly useful for every aspect of being a percussionist. However, I can also provide meaningful feedback for everything from orchestral playing, percussion ensemble playing, and solo playing for mallet instruments.
In addition to my experience as a DCI snare drummer, I have played with UCSD's graduate percussion ensemble "Red Fish Blue Fish", the La Jolla Symphony, and have received prizes for my mallet solos, including 2nd place at the 2014 Texas PAS mallet competition.
