About Tan
Hello, I'm Tan!
I am an independent researcher in music theory with a master's from McGill University, and a singing teacher.
Personally, I am interested in Eastern pop music (J-pop, K-pop, Canto-pop, ...), media music (anison, anime), transformational theory, semiotics, and Eastern aesthetics. I'm also a classically trained singer (with a special passion for baroque) but my musical interests and teaching expertise aren't limited to these styles. I have taught both singing and theory students interested in classical, pop, rock and musical theatre.
In addition to teaching, I continue to perform. My most recent performances include singing with the Stanford Early Music Singers, and several other solo recitals during my time at The University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College, UK.

What you learn in my studio is exactly what you need to know in order to achieve your musical goals—so relevance plays a BIG part in our lessons.
I strongly advise all my students to complement the study of music theory with technology such as online resources that improve their aural skills and sight-reading, while building healthy practice habits.
Learning resources are provided. All levels are welcome. No prior knowledge of music theory is expected.
