About Phil
I have taught hundreds of students of all ages and abilities, helping over 25 of them to get into the UK's leading music Conservatoires. Former students have also gone on to win JazzFM Awards, headlining some of the biggest festivals in Europe.
My teaching experience includes my continued role as a lecturer in music performance at the University of Kent alongside my role as Musical Director for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra's Academy Programme. I have also worked in several primary and secondary schools, alongside music hubs and guest workshops at The Royal College of Music, Trinity Laban and Leeds Conservatoire.
My own educational background includes a CHASE Scholarship to study a PhD (completing in 2024), an MMus (merit) from Trinity Laban and a BA (hons) from Leeds Conservatoire. I have also received several awards for my music including two Parliamentary Jazz Awards, a London Music Award and the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award.

I pride myself on designing fun, engaging lessons that are bespoke to the student and use thoroughly researched methodology. My tuition focuses on developing ownership, leadership and confidence alongside musical ability; in the hope that students will develop core skills in self-analysis, time management and practice discipline. By teaching students to work well by themselves (in between lessons), the best progress is always made!
