About Mila
I have a master's in reading in a program approved by the International Dyslexia Association. My reading-specific studies were also informed by previous studies in linguistics (how to analyze language) and early childhood development (cognitive development). I am curious about learning and appreciate the novelty and unpredictability that each student brings. When a student cannot grasp a concept, the struggle becomes a mystery for me to solve using all knowledge gained from all of my studies, my experience teaching all subjects, and parenting.

Lessons will be based on a solid foundation in the five pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. * Reading in English is based on the association of sounds with letters (phonics). Some students struggle with hearing these and may need additional phonological exercises that include larger chunks of the sounds of language (syllables, phrases). * Other students may struggle with rapid association of letters and sounds necessary for automatic decoding of words. * Meanwhile students must develop their vocabulary and comprehension through listening activities so as not to be held back by their struggles with decoding. * Handwriting is a reliably effective way to strengthen phonics (consistently supported by research findings). * The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity has excellent information, including accessible explanations for which parts of the brain activate to read and their functions.
