About Ambrose
I have an MFA in Creative Writing and a BA in Theater with a minor in psychology. Stories are fundamental to society and tell us so much about human nature, so here's one about me.
I was a weird kid and now I'm a weird adult. My ADHD wasn't diagnosed until I was out of school and it was the root of a lot of struggles I had when I was younger. However, that past experience helps me connect with students and see things from their perspective.
While taking graduate school online, I did a three-month work-stay on a family farm in Santa Paula. When their then ten-year-old took a liking to me, my responsibilities shifted from farm work to part-time nanny and tutor. A year later, the family decided to hybrid homeschool and I came back to spearhead that education. It was this family that encouraged me to seek out others in need of tutoring or homeschool help.

My lesson plans are crafted to serve each student and meet their individual needs. An initial assessment/consultation with the student and guardians helps determine the primary focus of our lessons which are then adjusted as I get to know the student better.
I have a knack for meeting kids at their level and am able to create a balance between friend and authority figure that helps foster a helpful learning environment.
I currently work with an incredibly smart 11-year-old. Getting her to understand and accept why she has to do assignments is as much the lesson as the schoolwork itself.
Focusing on students grades 5-12, my expertise is in the language arts. This includes reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, creative writing, academic writing, and literary analysis. Literature subjects include Greek mythology, Shakespeare, classical fiction, and genre fiction.
