About Miriam
I am a third year medical school student. I have given tutoring lessons on a small scale to 3 people and they have had improvement in understanding and better grades than they had. I have been learning Biology for 5 years. I have also tutored students in Maths at KS3 and GCSE level Maths and they have offered me great reviews.

My teaching method involves use of short tests structured by myself from the topics the student is learning to establish problem areas. Once the problem areas have been identified, each topic would be dissected into different parts and with the aid of visuals such as study maps, worksheets and videos, I will explain the different aspects and try to find inter-relations between topics. An example is if a student who has come for tutoring support in Mathematics has come with four different topics that they would find problematic. I would create a test with varying level of ease or difficulty with questions (equal amount) from these four topics. The test will not be long. It will be approximately 3 questions per topic and the student will spend 25 minutes doing the questions during the first lesson. Any question that the student is unable to answer, they can leave it and it will become a basis of discussion, that is, the topic where the question is from will be the first that we address. We will spend the next 20 minutes of this first lesson discussing this topic and breaking down different components of this topic and addressing what aspect of the question hence subject made it difficult. If all the questions have been answered then we will mark the test together discussing reasoning for methodology and when we get to a question that shows great difficulty, it will become the first topic of discussion. If a student does not finish the questions within the time limit for the initial lesson it is fine. We will discuss what they have managed within the given time and work from here gradually building on things. Here is how the first lesson plan will be: 1. Introduction 5-10 minutes 2. Initial test to establish a starting point- 25 minutes 3. Discussion of the test (this will be the point we will choose which topic to start from) 20 minutes. This will also include teaching of one of the concepts based on the test. 4. Closure (how the student feels about the plan, their suggestions and priorities as well as agreement on time and follow-up) - 5-10 minutes Subsequent lesson plan: 1. Introduction (5 minutes) 2. Teaching using videos, worksheets and virtual boards. Every 15 minutes there will be a mini-quiz (5 questions) to check understanding and consolidation - 45-50 minutes 3. Closure- check how the student feels about the progress they have made so far and the plan for the next week as well as checking their priorities for order of things to cover. 3 minutes. Following weeks: 1. Introduction - 3 minutes 2. Starter test - 12 minutes with few questions from previous week. 3. Teaching using videos, worksheets and virtual boards. Every 12 minutes there will be a mini-quiz (5 questions) to check understanding and consolidation - 42 minutes. 4. Closure- 3 minutes. Check how the student feels about the progress they have made so far and the plan for the next week as well as checking their priorities for order of things to cover. Quizzes can be challenging, and I do my best to make these as reasonable as possible. They are there to check consolidation and understanding. Verbally stating that understanding is clear is not sufficient, as I do not want to leave a student lacking in confidence and awareness of the concepts that they require assistance in.

Very knowledgeable and great at breaking down and communicating complex concepts, particularly in sciences and mathematics. Soft spoken, respectable and truly interested in her students - Miriam is very encouraging and full of insights.
Out of all my years as a student, I have had many tutors, however, I haven’t had a classmate who was willing to help me/tutor me in my random times of need. I haven’t met anyone who is as patient and very understanding as Miriam. She has various methods of teaching of which involves adapting to a students way of learning. She is eager to help others and she also gives space to the students for them to understand what is being taught. She is very keen on creating a safe space in which each individual can ask questions as well and share their thoughts and problems. She, herself is always doing more than is expected of her in order to not only improve herself but also for helping others who might be curious. She is a very trustworthy, patient, understanding and intellectual person.
