About Emily
I am a medical student from the University of Auckland. I am passionate about teaching, and love to watch my students' confidence grow over time. I love what I study and hope to help students find their passions too.
Rather than students being reliant on a tutor to understand concepts, I believe great tutoring develops a student's learning techniques to the point where they become self-sufficient and develop skills to learn effectively and maintain a great work-life balance in years to come through uni and beyond.
I achieved L3 NCEA with excellence, and NCEA scholarship in Biology during year 12. At University, I achieved A+ grades in my first-year Chemistry, Biology and Medical Science papers. I was in the top 30 students in my year in the CHEM110 paper in first year university out of a class of 1000+ (according to grade distribution of the Clinical Selection Test in 2020). I have finished 5 years of Medical school, and am currently undertaking a year in research focused on maternal health.
I have over 300+ hours of tutoring experiencing, teaching NCEA and at a first year university level. I have taught classes (~20 students), small groups (2-3 students), and one-on-one. Many of my students have gone on to get into Medicine at the University of Auckland. I have also worked with students from a range of backgrounds, with different needs and goals. I have been a Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) mentor for first year students at the University of Auckland, and a mentor as a part of the Women in Health Network at the University of Auckland. I love learning and science, and this translates into my enthusiastic and warm energy as a tutor.
Outside of my studies, I love hiking, skiing, and spending time with friends and whānau. I'm an avid musician and have completed my Grade 8 flute exam with Distinction with Trinity College London.
I offer tutoring for:
- NCEA Chemistry
- NCEA Biology
- Year 9-10 Science, Maths, English
I cover the following standards for NCEA:
L2 Externals:
- 91164 Demonstrate understanding of bonding, structure, properties and energy changes
- 91165 Demonstrate understanding of the properties of selected organic compounds
- 91166 Demonstrate understanding of chemical reactivity
L2 Internals:
- 91167 Demonstrate understanding of oxidation-reduction
L3 Externals:
- 91390 Demonstrate understanding of thermochemical principles and the properties of particles and substances
- 91391 Demonstrate understanding of the properties of organic compounds
- 91392 Demonstrate understanding of equilibrium principles in aqueous systems
L3 Internals:
- 91393 Demonstrate understanding of oxidation-reduction processes

Our first lesson will be geared around getting to know each other, how you've found your learning so far, your goals, and how we can best make tutoring fit for you.
Going forward, I will plan an agenda for each of our lessons, and send lesson summaries of what we have covered and further resources and exercises to utilise after our lessons.
Before each lesson:
- Lesson agenda set out
- Send me questions and concepts you'd like to cover
During the lesson:
- Combination of teaching concepts, mind maps, and practice questions, tailored to you
- Teaching methodologies including the socratic method with elaborative interrogation, dual coding, active recall and scaffolded learning (not as complicated as they sound!)
- Setting you up with learning and study skills which you will continue to benefit from after our sessions including active recall, spaced repetition, mind mapping, blurting and many more
After each lesson:
- Lesson summaries sent
- Resources and homework (tailored to you) which complement the lesson
Chemistry is often a subject that students find daunting. I break down Chemistry into a way that is easy to understand, and focus on building upon solid foundations before delving into more tricky concepts. Many of my students have gone on to achieve Merit and Excellence in their externals, when they at first were aiming for Achieved! Chemistry is a subject that is very objective and makes sense and can be enjoyable when you understand the foundations well. I teach chemistry in a way that is not just what is required for NCEA, but in a way that sets you up well to excel in the first year university CHEM110 paper which is required for applying for Medicine.

I’ve known Emily for many years and have worked alongside her as a colleague. She has an incredible heart for her students and values their wellbeing as well as their academic success. Emily is experienced in tutoring both commercially and privately, I highly recommend her as a tutor.
I was introduced to Emily by a friend and she’s been a great help as I prepare for medical school. She’s very hands-on with her teaching and always open to feedback, which really helps me understand tricky concepts better. Emily is also great at explaining topics in detail when I need it—she’s made a big difference in my confidence with science.
