About Matthew

- What kind of experience do you have?

Lessons are carefully planned and I always consider and adapt to your musical interests and modes of working. I am an enthusiastic teacher having taught from beginner to grade 8, teaching both Associated Board and Trinity. Recent students of mine have managed to achieve a distinction at grade 1 violin and a merit for grade 4.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a fully enhanced DBS check certificate that I am able to show upon request.

- Where and with whom did you train?

After studying viola and having master classes with concert viola player Simon Rowland-Jones, I achieved a high distinction in my Licentiate diploma with Trinity College London. I also hold an Associate diploma on the Violin.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have a wide range of students who took exams in 2017 with Trinity College London. This included students taking initial grade, Grade 2 and Grade 5 Violin exams held at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

About the lesson

I have been teaching for over 10 years and enjoy helping my students pass exams after a lot of preparation.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I mainly teach Violin, Viola, Cello, Recorder and Piano. I teach Violin and Viola from grade 1 to Diploma, Cello and Recorder from grade 1 to 5 and Piano to beginners.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

After studying viola and having master classes with concert viola player Simon Rowland-Jones, Matthew achieved a high distinction in his Licentiate diploma with Trinity College London. He also holds an Associate diploma on the Violin.

- How much do you charge?

Music lessons are charged at £35.00 per hour. An extra £10 fee is added if you require me to travel to you, this is to cover the cost and time of travel.

- Where do you teach?

Most of my teaching is done at my house in Limehouse E14 due to having all the music stands, books, instruments required to give music tuition. If you require me to travel to you then an additional £10 charge is made for the time and cost of travel.

- When are you available?

I am available to teach from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 8pm.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and abilities and have a wealth of experience in teaching complete beginners through to those wishing to takes Grade 5 and Grade 8.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for music exams with Trinity College London and ABRSM.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I do not do online tutoring.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

All students who have a passion for music are welcome to contact me to have music tuition.

Matthew is an excellent tutor who has helped an adult beginner rapidly progress on the violin, with fun and enjoyable lessons. Matthew is great at adapting lessons when I'm struggling with a component of a piece, switching to different technical exercises to help me improve on the specific area, before later returning to the piece (which is invariably easier following the exercise). Lessons are fun and varied and I leave each lesson feeling improved and more able. He is very reliable and always excited to teach and talk about the violin. I have been learning with Matthew for over 6 months now and am incredibly grateful for all of the help and guidance he has given me so far; I look forward to continuing my progress with him
