About Shannon

Hi, my name is Shannon and I am 20 years old with a huge passion for working with children and young people! In my dream world, I want to be a Youth Worker as I really enjoy supporting children and young people and watching them reach their potential. Previously I have worked in a few different customer facing roles at Belfast International Airport as well as voluntary roles too. I volunteered with Solas in the most recent academic year, specifically working 1-1 with primary 3 and 4 children supporting them with numeracy, I hope to return to this role in the new school year. I will also be going back into education myself, as well as taking on a new voluntary role as a Crisis Line Volunteer with Shout, in order to pursue my dream career as a Youth Worker, alongside studying a Youth Work qualification. I recently completed my OCN NI Level 1 Peer Mentoring for Young People Qualification with Start360. Additionally, I have completed many certificates through the New Skills Academy including Mentoring and Coaching Skills, Emotional Intelligence, Selective Mutism Awareness, Introduction to Mindful Listening, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Paediatric First Aid, Suicide Prevention, Trauma Awareness, Self Harm Awareness, Introduction to Child Counselling, Play Therapy, Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness, Child Neglect Awareness, Child Protection, Mental Wellbeing in Children and Young People, Safeguarding Children and Mental Health Awareness.

I think that is very important to not only be a support for a child academically, but to also provide a safe place for a child to ensure that they feel comfortable, have their needs understood and mental health prioritised! Through my previous voluntary roles I have completed Enhanced Access NI checks as well as Basic Access NI checks to be ale to obtain my airside pass for Belfast International Airport.

I think that one of the most important things when it comes to supporting children academically is factoring in their personal needs and abilities, as well as how they best learn! Through my experience volunteering with Solas, I found it was very important to use the first session together to get to know each other, as well as playing some maths based games then starting to complete work in the following sessions. Each session I took a few minutes at the start to ask the child what they done in the previous week and how they are feeling then we completed around 20 minutes of work followed by a maths game to end the session, as well as a sticker of course! At the end of the school year, I had met with the SENCo at the Primary School and the project coordinator from Solas to discuss how it went, and I received some very positive feedback from the class teachers of the children I worked with.

I feel that I would like to follow the same type of structure, as although we did get through a good amount of work and learning, there was also some fun incorporated into this too, as well as allowing the child some time to talk about their previous week and their feelings to make the session more enjoyable. To adapt to supporting children with maths, I would very much so still allow the start of the session to be a time for the child to discuss their previous week etc, as long as they wanted to, and then complete some maths and finish of with a game for some fun!

I don’t have any experience in tutoring so my rates are not at all high! I have completed education up till GCSE Level for maths and completed Higher Tier (M4&M8 papers). I am confident with maths, especially key stage 1,2&3 maths.
