About Roser
I have been teaching mathematics for twenty five years, and I started tutoring while I was in college. I taught math at the high school level for twelve years, and have been a college professor for just about the same amount of time. While I taught high school mathematics, I was also a department chair for a few years; this role gave me the opportunity to see the big picture of the high school curriculum, and adjust the curriculum so that it would be responsive to student needs and interests. I love working with students on learning a new concept or delving more deeply into a math idea. Now, as a math professor, the time I value most is time spent in the classroom or during office hours, when I get to know my students and instill passion in mathematics through my role.

When preparing to teach, I always explain the goals of the lesson, providing the context in which the ideas/skills are important. I then present ideas and provide lots of examples, and always ask questions of my students. Asking questions that probe and assess someone's thinking is really important in the learning process. I also provide practice opportunities with time for the student to ask their own questions. If a student comes with specific questions at the beginning of the session, I can work with the student on ensuring understanding and use those questions to guide the rest of the learning session. Sometimes students just ask for support in completing homework, and I am happy to do that too, using homework questions as opportunities for exploring mathematical ideas.
