NATURE OF ROOTS OF THE QUADRATIC FUNCTION
The expression b2 - 4ac called the discriminant is crucial when determining the type or nature of roots that the quadratic function can have. We have the following cases:
CASE EXAMPLE
1. Real roots : Here b2 - 4a c 0 x2 +4x+4=0 or x2 +5x+6=0
1.1 Real equal roots : Here b2 - 4a c = 0 x2 +4x+4=0 ; 42 -4 (1)(4) = 0
1.2 Real unequal roots :Here b2 - 4a c > 0 x2 +5x+6=0 ; 52 -4 (1)(6) = 1 > 0
(concealed information) roots: Here b2 - 4a c < 0 x2 +2x+4=0 ; 22 -4 (1)(4) = - 12 < 0
Figure 14: Real unequal roots : x = -3 or x = -1
