About Sarah
For most of my time as a tutor, I have done one-on-one, in-person tutoring in my office, but in more recent years, I have also started doing online, remote tutoring. I don't use Zoom, as I prefer platforms that include an interactive online whiteboard, in addition to a video feature. At this point, I am wanting to find more online students, as it is so very convenient to work from my home. And, if done well, online tutoring can be just as effective as doing it in person. I do have a website that may contain useful information: (concealed information)

I have been a private math tutor for approximately 35 years working in the Orinda, California area. My emphasis has been on high school math, i.e. algebra through calculus, although I also tutor middle school students. I do not tutor high school statistics. One of my main goals when working with any given student is to emphasize the development of critical thinking skills (as opposed to memorization skills). Learning math should be all about understanding concepts and applying them to solving problems. I find that some students are relieved, once they start working with me, to find out that becoming skilled in math does not involve memorizing vast numbers of formulas and procedures (although there is, admittedly, some memorization required), but rather, using one's understanding and intelligence to solve interesting puzzles. Other students are wary at first, when I show them that math can (and should) be about creative thinking, but I can usually get them to open up to this point of view. In my view, teaching is not about unzipping someone's head, pouring knowledge into it, and zipping it back up again. The process has to be far more interactive than that. Because of this, I have had to learn, over the years, how to get inside the thinking process of any particular student, to be able to see where their stumbling blocks might be. Stumbling blocks that they themselves may not yet be aware of.

Ms Harvey literally changed my kids lives. Her approach to math is unique: she is able to look at it, and explain it, and dissect it in a number of ways, so she can always meet the student where they are. My daughter struggled for years, and her time with Ms Harvey made her more confident and successful in Math, so that school overall became more enjoyable. We are very grateful to her!
We cannot recommend Sarah Harvey highly enough! She has been an absolute game-changer for our children’s math education. From the moment she began working with them, Sarah brought a level of clarity, patience, and enthusiasm that completely transformed how they viewed the subject.
Her deep understanding of mathematics is matched only by her incredible ability to communicate complex concepts in an engaging way. Sarah tailors each session to our children’s individual learning styles, helping them not only improve their grades but also build genuine confidence and a love for math. Sarah will always communicate with the parent(s) if there is a question or concern. Sarah is available for a parent-teacher conferences, which are to be scheduled upon request on the parental end. We have been scheduling the conferences quarterly.
Sarah is always punctual, well-prepared, and has an incredibly positive and encouraging demeanor. Our kids look forward to their lessons with her—which speaks volumes! We've seen measurable improvements not just in test scores, but in their overall attitude toward problem-solving and critical thinking.
Sarah is more than just a tutor; she’s a mentor and an inspiring role model. We feel incredibly fortunate to have found her and wholeheartedly recommend her to any family seeking a tutor who truly makes a lasting difference.
Sarah taught me through my pre-calculus and, more importantly, AP Calculus courses. She is a great tutor and explains everything very directly. I felt very free to ask any questions and understood unclear concepts or problems whenever I went through them with her. She gave me a lot of practice problems to use; it was a good amount, but not too many, as she is understanding about other commitments you may have. Sarah's tutoring resulted in me passing both classes with strong A's and a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam (which helped me in college a lot)! I highly recommend her if you're looking to get not only a high grade in the class, but also a clear understanding of the material.
Sarah has been an incredible math tutor for our son. She has been helping him with a challenging class - Algebra 2/Precalc/Trigonometry that he took as a Freshman. We've been consistently impressed with her proactive approach to staying on top of our child's progress. She doesn't just teach; she truly monitors understanding, and we've really appreciated her willingness to raise concerns immediately if she notices our teen struggling with specific math concepts.
After we shared our concerns about some test results, Sarah was quick to suggest a new strategy: doing practice tests ahead of time. This made a huge difference, and we've seen a significant improvement in our son's test scores since then.
Another thing we really appreciate is how Sarah thinks ahead. She even proposed a summer program to help our son prepare for his challenging Calculus AB class next year, which shows she's truly invested in his long-term success.
On a practical note, Sarah has a very flexible schedule, and the convenient scheduling tool she uses has made our lives as parents of a very busy student so much easier. This attention to detail really helps us manage our son's commitments.
Beyond her teaching skills, Sarah's communication with us as parents has been outstanding. She provides regular, clear, and actionable feedback, which has made it so easy to stay informed about our son's learning progress We highly recommend Sarah to any parent looking for a dedicated and communicative math tutor who goes above and beyond.See more recommendations
