About Heleina Marie
Hi, I'm Heleina, an active statistician working with undergraduate and graduate students, and a professor in teacher education. I've been tutoring K-12 kids since 2022.
Tutoring wasn't part of the plan. It started when I noticed a real decline in enthusiasm among my own university students during the COVID pandemic, kids in their 20s who felt disengaged from learning itself. It hit me that if this is where things end up by college, the ones truly at risk are the kids in earlier grades, still forming that foundation. So I volunteered to teach kids online, and it became something I genuinely look forward to: a retreat from the theoretical side of my work, and a chance to catch problems early.
As a statistician, I show students the logic behind formulas, not just the steps. As a professor of teacher education, I understand how people learn, not just what to teach. Years of watching where students fall through the cracks, in college and now in tutoring, taught me how to catch it early.

As a statistician, I've spent years working with real data and real problems. Instead of teaching formulas in isolation, I show students the logic behind them.
Take "multiply fractions straight across": instead of memorizing the rule, I show what's actually happening when you split something into pieces.
That's the difference between a kid who forgets it by Friday and one who actually gets it. They can reverse the operation because they understand what's happening. They can read a word problem and know what's actually missing. And when they hit something new, they try to connect it to what they already know instead of freezing up and asking for help right away.
