About Laura

I am a lifelong user of computers and the internet. I was born at a lucky period of time where I am a "digital native", but before computers became more people-friendly and most of my to-date experience with computers being before smartphones were the norm. But also before education included anything more than a typing class! Because of this, much of my early memories of computing is having to work out for hours to do exactly what I wanted. This has been beneficial in helping others, because the methodology of working up to that is embedded in my brain! I went through the grind, so if I can help others avoid much of that struggle and get the experience instead, I've saved someone lots of time. :) I recently finished a Masters degree in Design Informatics at the University of Edinburgh and received a 2.1 in my undergraduate degree in Computer Science. My special interests lie in User Experience, Design and User Research with people with marginalised needs. My preferred research methodology (and life motto at this point) is working alongside people to understand their needs and frustrations, and conducting research and work WITH them instead of only on their behalf. Previous groups I've worked with are those of multicultural backgrounds (primarily migrants) and those with healthcare needs (mental and physical) and their companions.

About the lesson

Hello there! My name is Laura. I am a recent Computer Science graduate from the University of Edinburgh. I am a tutor with 6 years of experience in teaching ages early childhood through adulthood. I come from an international schooling background, and am well versed in British, American, and International school standards. My approach with students is calm, cheerful, and patient. I aim to have trust and clear communication with my students, especially those with specific academic needs. Our first lesson will be learning based so that you can get a feel for my teaching style and see if it works for you or your child and so that I can evaluate individual learning styles and knowledge. Beforehand, we will have a brief discussion whether through speaking or writing so that I can develop a first lesson. INDIVIDUAL LEARNING DIFFERENCES AND EXPERIENCE Having been diagnosed with ADHD from a young age, and having had to undertake hard work and discipline to succeed academically, I understand personally that students broadly benefit from this type of relationship with their teachers. I do not teach subjects I do not have a passion in, as I hope to encourage my students to find their own passions in my subjects! I also have extensive experience tutoring students with autism. Having close family and friends who are autistic, I am well aware of how students can benefit from a curriculum and teaching style that uses direct and consistent methods. Each student's instruction is tailored to their individuality and I make great efforts to work with their strengths and to help their weaker spots. Thankfully, my students have benefitted greatly from 1-to-1 interaction where group settings or inconsistent interactions didn't provide a great environment for their needs! ABOUT MY COMPUTER SCIENCE EXPERIENCE I am experienced with Python, C#, C++, and Java. I also teach computer literacy and independence with software and general usage. In the past year I have begun teaching programming logic and fundamentals to children in earlier stages, based off of my experience teaching older students and seeing a clear need for understanding "how the computer thinks" that isn't clouded by also learning programming at the same time. I take a fundamental approach with my students, aiming to fill in gaps in understanding and learning. Having once been at a total beginner level myself, I understand many of the difficulties students have when learning computing. Please get in contact to discuss your needs and goals.
