Teacher: Math Tutor
Qualification: Master’s Degree in Education
Subject: Mathematics
Lesson Topic: Solving Two-Step Equations
Grade Level: Grades 6–8
Duration: 60 Minutes
Instructional Approach: Explicit instruction, guided practice, differentiated instruction, and individualized feedback

1. Lesson Overview
This lesson is designed to help students understand and solve two-step equations using inverse operations. Students will develop problem-solving skills, strengthen mathematical reasoning, and build confidence in their ability to solve equations independently.

Instruction will be tailored to students’ individual learning needs, with clear explanations, worked examples, guided practice, and opportunities to apply learning independently.

2. Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Identify the variable, coefficients, and constants in a two-step equation.
Explain how inverse operations help solve equations.
Solve two-step equations accurately using a systematic process.
Verify solutions by substituting the answer into the original equation.
Demonstrate increased confidence in solving mathematical problems independently.
Success Criteria: Students will correctly solve at least 4 out of 5 two-step equations and explain the steps used to obtain their answers.

3. Materials and Resources
Whiteboard or notebook
Pencils and paper
Calculator, when appropriate
Practice worksheets
Visual examples and step-by-step demonstrations
Exit ticket or short assessment
4. Prior Knowledge
Students should have a basic understanding of:

Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Order of operations
Variables and simple one-step equations
The meaning of the equals sign
The lesson will begin with a brief review to identify any gaps in prerequisite knowledge.

5. Lesson Procedures
A. Warm-Up and Review — 5 Minutes
Present two review problems:

x
+
4
=
10
3
x
=
15
Ask students to solve the problems and explain their reasoning.

Teacher’s role: Review prior knowledge, identify misconceptions, and connect familiar concepts to the new lesson.

Student’s role: Solve the problems and explain their thinking.

B. Introduction and Learning Purpose — 5 Minutes
Introduce two-step equations and explain that solving an equation means finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true.

Display the equation:

2
x
+
3
=
11
Ask: “How can we find the value of
x
while keeping both sides of the equation balanced?”

Explain that students will use inverse operations to solve equations systematically.

C. Direct Instruction and Modeling — 15 Minutes
Model the following example step by step:

2
x
+
3
=
11
Step 1: Subtract 3 from both sides.

2
x
+
3
−
3
=
11
−
3
2
x
=
8
Step 2: Divide both sides by 2.

2
x
2
=
8
2
x
=
4
Step 3: Check the solution.

Substitute
x
=
4
into the original equation:

2
(
4
)
+
3
=
11
8
+
3
=
11
Therefore,
x
=
4
is the correct solution.

Key teaching point: Whatever operation is performed on one side of an equation must also be performed on the other side to maintain equality.

D. Guided Practice — 10 Minutes
Work through these examples with the student:

3
x
+
2
=
14
4
x
−
5
=
11
2
x
+
7
=
19
For each problem, ask the student to identify the first operation, explain why it is appropriate, and complete the next step.

Provide prompts and corrective feedback as needed, gradually reducing assistance as the student gains confidence.

E. Independent Practice — 10 Minutes
Ask the student to solve the following problems independently:

2
x
+
5
=
17
5
x
−
4
=
21
3
x
+
6
=
24
4
x
−
7
=
13
6
x
+
2
=
32
Students should show their work and check at least one answer by substitution.

Teacher’s role: Observe the student's strategy, accuracy, and level of independence. Record recurring errors for future instruction.

F. Assessment and Closure — 10 Minutes
Use the following exit ticket:

Solve
3
x
+
4
=
19
.
Explain why you subtract 4 before dividing by 3.
Check your answer by substituting it into the original equation.
Ask the student to identify one thing they learned and one area where they would like additional practice.

Review the lesson objectives and celebrate progress.

6. Differentiated Instruction
For students who need additional support:

Review one-step equations before introducing two-step equations.
Use visual models and color-coded steps.
Provide partially completed examples.
Break problems into smaller, manageable steps.
For students working at grade level:

Provide a variety of two-step equations.
Encourage students to explain their reasoning.
Include error-analysis activities.
For advanced students:

Introduce equations involving negative numbers or fractions.
Present word problems that require students to create equations.
Ask students to compare different solution strategies.
7. Assessment and Evaluation
Student learning will be evaluated through:

Warm-up responses and prerequisite-skill checks
Participation during guided practice
Accuracy and independence during individual practice
Exit-ticket performance
Ability to explain and verify solutions
Mastery benchmark: At least 80% accuracy on the independent practice and exit-ticket questions. Students who do not meet this benchmark will receive targeted reteaching and additional practice.

8. Homework or Extension Activity
Have students write and solve three real-life word problems involving two-step equations.

Example: A student buys a notebook for $3 and several identical pens. The total cost is $15. If each pen costs $2, how many pens were purchased?

Students should write an equation, solve it, and explain how they checked their answer.

9. Reflection and Follow-Up
After the lesson, review the student's performance and record:

Concepts mastered
Misconceptions or recurring errors
Level of independence
Areas requiring additional support
Recommended focus for the next lesson
Use the assessment results to plan the next instructional session and adjust the level of difficulty to meet the student's needs.

10. Expected Outcome
By the end of the lesson, students should demonstrate a stronger understanding of two-step equations, increased accuracy in applying inverse operations, and greater confidence in approaching algebraic problems.

Teaching Philosophy: Every student can make meaningful progress in mathematics when instruction is clear, supportive, appropriately challenging, and responsive to individual learning needs.
