About Jonathan
I have experience teaching A-level students English literature, and undergraduate university students philosophy.
Drastic improvements were made in their ability to comprehend the material, in their confidence to pursue their own ideas, and in the clarity of the presentation of their ideas.

Deleuze defined philosophy as “the art of forming, inventing and fabricating concepts”; knowing full well in his advocation of a 'pedagogy of concept' the bidirectional relationship of information as it pertains to the world as perceived. We are in other words subject to our beliefs, which very much shape the world that we see and the manner in which we respond to it. What I offer in testing one's concepts is the fostering of a liberating and therapeutic critical eye through which to cut through confusion.
My expertise is Ancient Greek philosophy, and in particular Plato. I am also capable of teaching Indian philosophy, with my focus being Buddhism, Sankhya, and Advaita Vedanta. I cover metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics. I also tutor English Literature, having a particular interest in George Orwell's 1984.
A suggested philosophical modus operandi:
- Beginning as is appropriate with the very nature of experience itself, we will establish a first-person phenomenological appreciation. We will then proceed to explore the viability of rationalist explanations so as to avoid inevitable solipsist metaphysical conclusions. Being able to agree on the existence of the external world, you will then be equipped - and not just theoretically - to appreciate the nature of the world as a representation; that is, the conceptual (or to a certain extent 'self-created') nature of objects. Having achieved this you will better be equipped to understand other philosophers who, after all, are dealing with the same prime phenomenological material.
