About John
I graduated Magna Cum Laude and have a master's degree in US history. I have taught both US and world history to groups of 1 to 60 students in schools and colleges, museums, and person to person. None of my students have failed; I am always willing to work with a student to ensure they succeed.

The old method of teaching history is the "coverage model," using the "survey course." The old theory was "you have to memorize the entire historical timeline before you can do history." All this teaches students is how to memorize.
History taught properly teaches students not how to memorize, but how to think critically. My students examine history directly and do the work as a historian would do it. We analyze historical information, draw conclusions with well-supported arguments and present our results. The most common pre-law degree is history because these are exactly the skills of a lawyer: research case law, analyze it and apply it to your case, present it in court.
The importance of critical thinking in today's post-truth world cannot be overstated. The ability to evaluate information and the source of that information helps to defend people from propaganda and outright fake news.
I have just completed teaching a Civil War class at a university, examining not just the time period but how the ripple effects still affect our society today. One of my students created a video for the final project which we are working on publishing with the local historical society!
