About Suroma

I recently submitted my Honors thesis in Marine biology, specifically on zooplankton in the Tasman Sea. I have enjoyed learning about ocean creatures, underwater volcanoes and rocks. I hope to pass on my fascination about the biological world to my students. I believe one learns best through teaching, one of the reasons why I began tutoring from 2nd year of University. I try to use techniques that helped me while I was studying as well as try and understand what works best for that specific student. I loved teaching myself and my students through Venn diagrams, mind maps and flow charts. Going at their pace helps them grasp concepts and still follow their syllabus. I believe in short breaks and some homework to keep students on track with the content. But most of all, one must have fun while learning!

About the lesson

Kia ora,

I have taught middle school to school-leaving students going into university majoring in biology and geography for more than 3 years during my Bachelors and Masters both online and offline. I have had Indian and Kiwi students studying under the IGCSE curriculum, successfully complete their boards with A+ and A grades. I have tutored a 1st Year Geography course (GEOG 103/103G) at the University of Auckland this year.

I prefer taking 1.5-2 hour classes and assigning some homework to keep the student on track. My timings are flexible. I use audiovisual methods of teaching to keep it interesting. It is only recently that I finished my education, so the concepts are fresh and I always prefer teaching with the help of my own notes and texts. I believe in building a rapport with the child and that one always learns better by teaching. The greatest reward for a teacher would be when the student enjoys the subject.
