About Spencer

I started taking guitar lessons when I was 6 years old and picked up bass and drums a few years later. Growing up, I loved classic and progressive rock, idolizing musicians such as Steve Howe (Yes), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), and Geddy Lee (Rush). In addition, throughout my youth I often worked with kids as a summer camp counselor and babysitter.

After high school, I attended UNC-Chapel Hill, where I graduated with a dual bachelor's in Economics and Political Science in 2018. During those years I spent most of my free time playing guitar, writing songs, and expanding my musical horizons! I became a huge music nerd and dove deep into understanding jazz harmony and the ins and outs of music theory and technique on my instruments, branching out from my roots in rock to genres such as jazz, metal, and bluegrass. On the side, I also spent free time working with kids coaching youth programs in ultimate frisbee.

After college, I decided to commit fully to pursuing music and education. I love teaching and working with kids as much as I love music, which I have unfortunately found is not a common sentiment among other teachers. I love to build relationships with my students and am honored to have the privilege to see them learn and grow!

Outside of music, I enjoy spending time with my two cats Toph & Billie, rock climbing, watching Spurs basketball & Panthers football, and riding my motorcycle

About the lesson

Hi! My name is Spencer Beck. I'm 30 year-old graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill who has been playing guitar for 20+ years. I also have 10+ years of performing experience and 6+ years of teaching experience!

The core of my teaching philosophy is that the best way to learn music is to play what you like! Playing the music you like sets clear, actionable goals and builds intrinsic motivation, which is the most important aspect of becoming a successful musician. Every song has something to teach us, and it is best for the student to choose their own path and for me to guide them!

This philosophy means that I do not subscribe to any type of one-size-fits-all curriculum. The skills required to play classical guitar, for example, are completely different than the skills required to play the blues, so it doesn’t make sense to force each student into the same experience.

There are, of course, certain rudimentary skills and techniques that every musician must learn, but I find that these almost always present themselves naturally as students work through their repertoire. My approach forces students to come across these techniques on their own as a step along the path that they have chosen, which means that they’ll actually want to learn the “boring stuff!”

At the end of the day, even though it requires work, music is supposed to be fun - I’ve always believed that being a great musician is meaningless if you dread picking up your instrument. My ultimate goal is to spread my joy for music and give kids a safe space to learn and be creative!
