About Elie

I am a year 13 A Level student studying Spanish, German and Religious Studies. In my GCSEs I was awarded grade 9s in all of these subjects, and I am currently working towards my final A Level exams, with plans to go to Edinburgh University to study German and International Relations. My predicted A Level grades are A*, A, A. I also have a current DBS check.

As a tutor, my strengths include being patient, clear and understanding, as well as disciplined and determined. I have lots of resources prepared to teach these subjects to (I)GCSE students of all abilities, in addition to having in depth experience working with children and other teenagers. Some of my experience includes volunteering at subject ‘clinics’ in my school, where I helped younger pupils who were struggling with these subjects. As well as this, I led summer camps for teenagers where I organised events and outdoor activities for them to develop valuable life skills, like perseverance and teamwork. When I was doing my GCSEs, I also had tutoring in other subjects so I have a good understanding of what students are looking for in these sessions and the most effective methods to help pupils progress.

About the lesson

I begin by assessing the ability level of each student through exam style questions, quizzes and discussion with the pupil about which topic areas they feel need the most improvement. This allows me to tailor the sessions to the strengths and weaknesses of the individual. As well as this, I make sure that all material and skills covered are directly relevant to whichever exam board the pupil’s course is set by.

My sessions are a mixture of breaking down and speaking through concepts, doing practice exercises to consolidate understanding, and practising exam skills / exam style questions. In languages, my sessions cover all skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

I am available for pupils to contact me over the phone or via text message at any point, so it is not necessary to wait until our next session to ask any questions.

We begin each session by setting out our objectives and end with a summary of what we have learnt, 3 things the pupil did well with and 3 targets to improve upon next time.

I prepare my sessions in advance, so I always come with a lesson plan and resources, however this is flexible and open to the student’s requests on what they want to cover. For example, this could be going over some school work they found tricky. With regard to homework, I understand that pupils are often set lots from school, so I do not aim to give them more homework. However, if the pupil or family would like me to set some extra work to hone in on specific skills or topics, I am happy to do so and go through it together in the following session.

Ultimately, my tutoring is based on 3 principles:
1. No question is too silly - always ask if you’re not sure.
2. Mistakes are good because we can learn from them.
3. Believe in yourself!
