About Amrit

I am an experienced teacher, Head of Department and examiner with 20 years’ experience teaching across a range of exam boards. I have extensive knowledge of the demands of examinations and what examiners are looking for in high-quality responses.

I offer personalised tuition for students studying GCSE and A-Level, with sessions tailored to individual needs, ability and target grades.

About the lesson

Every lesson is structured around building knowledge, developing understanding and applying it effectively to exam questions.

Recap & Retrieval

We begin with a short Q&A and retrieval activity based on previous learning. This allows me to check understanding, identify any gaps or misconceptions, and revisit important knowledge before introducing new material. Regular retrieval helps students build a strong foundation and retain knowledge over time.

Learn Something New

We then focus on a new topic, theory, study or area of the specification. I explain ideas clearly and break down more challenging sociological concepts into manageable sections. Where appropriate, I use real-life examples, contemporary issues and relevant sociological studies to make the material easier to understand and remember.

Lessons are interactive rather than simply teacher-led, with questions throughout to check understanding and encourage students to explain ideas in their own words.

️ Apply Your Knowledge

Once the new material has been understood, we look at how to use it effectively. This might involve applying a theory to an example, comparing perspectives, analysing a study or developing evaluation points. The aim is to move beyond simply knowing the content and towards being able to use it in a sophisticated argument.

Exam Focus

A key part of every lesson is understanding how to turn knowledge into marks. We look at exam questions and explore exactly what the question is asking, how to structure an answer, and how to incorporate knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation.

As an experienced examiner, I can provide students with detailed guidance on what makes an answer successful and help them understand how to develop their responses to access the higher levels of the mark scheme.

We may work through an answer together, improve an existing response, or practise planning and writing exam questions under timed conditions.

Review & Next Steps

At the end of the lesson, we review what has been covered and identify any areas that need further consolidation. Students leave with a clear understanding of what they have learned, how it can be applied in an examination, and what they can work on before the next session.

The overall aim is to ensure that students are not simply learning the subject, but learning how to think sociologically and demonstrate their knowledge effectively in examinations.
