About Cassidy
I was always partial to maths throughout my time at school, but I nearly didn't take it at A-level — it was my mum who talked me into it, and thank goodness she did, because it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made. After finishing my A-levels with an A* in Mathematics, I went into full-time work for six months before realising something was missing: maths. So I picked up Further Maths, partly because I enjoy it and partly to earn a place at university. I've recently finished those exams and am now awaiting my results, which I'm hoping will confirm my offer from the University of Warwick to study Mathematics and Statistics BSc.

My lessons are built on a principle from learning science called desirable difficulty: we remember, and can actually reuse, what we've had to work out for ourselves far more reliably than what we've simply been shown. This matters enormously at A-level, because the step up from GCSE is bigger than most students expect. GCSE largely rewards spotting a familiar question type and applying a practised method; A-level Maths and Further Maths ask you to combine ideas and find your own way into problems you haven't seen before. You can sharpen that by grinding through hundreds of questions, and the volume does help — but on its own it tends to plateau you short of the top. The A* is won on the questions deliberately designed to catch out rote, memorised methods, and those you only beat by genuinely developing how you solve problems. So rather than lecture or work through things for you, I act as an assistant: I find the problems that stretch you, then help you do as much of the solving as you possibly can yourself, stepping in with the smallest useful nudge rather than the answer. It feels harder in the moment — and that's exactly what makes it stick.
