About Elena

I moved to the UK to study my degree with almost no real knowledge of the English language. I had to learn on the go. Soon after moving, I stumbled upon a vacancy for Spanish 'facilitators', meaning Spanish teachers that would engage in conversations with their students. Given my personal experience with learning a foreign language, I fully connected with the method.

I spent a year watching my students gain more and more confidence as the lessons went by. They weren't learning from a textbook, they were learning by speaking and practicing the language organically, and it showed. Last year, I gave English lessons to 4 year-olds and 7 year-olds at an English academy. The goal was to expose children to the English language from a very young age in order for them to get familiarised with it by the time they would start developing their ability to speak.

I believe a concept is much easier incorporated in its rightful context than by learning it through a textbook. In order to learn how to speak, you have to start by trying to speak.

About the lesson

Although I am Spanish, I was born raised in Brussels (Belgium). I moved to the UK to study my degree at the age of 17. I went from speaking Spanish and French at school to suddenly having to speak English everywhere I went. I moved without a real knowledge of the language and it was hard. I was forced to learn by just speaking and although that meant putting myself in situations in which I had to listen very closely in order to understand and expose myself to making mistakes, I ended up getting comfortable with the language at a very fast pace.

Just like it is with everything, a language is best learned through practice.

Each week, I'll give you a text to read at home - an article, a short story, a tale and you'll be in charge of not only reading it, but also highlighting the words you don't understand. During each lesson, we will have a conversation based around the text and we will both ask each other questions: I will ask you about the things you've read and you will ask me about all of those words you haven't quite understood.

The goal is for you to lose the fear of making mistakes and the embarrassment that sometimes comes along stepping out of your comfort zone when learning a new language. Remember, I've been there and I know how it feels. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease, and trust me: it will end up coming naturally.
