Taking an Online Xhosa Course: All the Benefits

South Africa boasts an extraordinary 12 official languages (sign language is the latest to be added to the list), and there are endless opportunities to become multilingual. It should go without saying that in such a culturally rich and diverse country, the more languages one can speak and understand, the better!

While English is the most prolifically spoken language around the globe, it is interesting that in South Africa it is only, in fact, the native tongue of one in 10 residents. On the other hand, the Nguni languages of Zulu and Xhosa are spoken by the majority of South Africans and are very both very handy to have as first, second or third languages.

Choosing whether to add Zulu or Xhosa to your repertoire of languages can be tricky as both are incredibly important in South Africa. If you are living in the Eastern Cape or Western Cape where Xhosa is widely spoken, you may be weighing up the benefits of learning Xhosa online. In fact, they are similar to the point of being mutually intelligible.

Along these lines, if you want to learn Xhosa online there are a few things to know before you even get started. For one, do not let the similarities between Zulu and Xhosa confound you before you even begin. The reason for this is that the two languages share many of the same words, even though the meanings differ. It might be helpful to try and memorise these exceptional examples:

- Ncokolo:  means to chat or converse in Xhosa, but to tease in Zulu.

- Nzima:  means heavy in Xhosa, but difficult in Zulu.

- Sela: means to drink in Xhosa, but means a thief in Zulu.

- Thetha: means to talk in Xhosa, but means to shout in Zulu.

- Phuza: means to kiss in Xhosa, but means to drink in Zulu.

- Cinga: means to think in Xhosa, but means to search in Zulu.
