Perhaps you want to learn more about cryptocurrency, but before you do, you want to know how it fits into the world of Fintech.
But what’s Fintech?
Before you head to your cryptocurrency class online, how about considering this short overview that will demystify a few big terms as your first crypto lesson?
Fintech, which is short for ‘financial technology’ refers to new technology that competes with traditional financial services.
Next, you should know that cryptocurrency is enabled (amongst other things) by a technology called blockchain. Bitcoin is the name of the most well-known cryptocurrency and the reason why blockchain was created.
Bitcoin, first mined in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto created the first blockchain in the world. The technology was meant to be secure, open and democratic. It was also meant to be private, meaning that nobody could scrutinise anyone else’s records or decline a financial operation.
Despite these features, Bitcoin played into the hands of the criminal underworld and it took about four years for anyone to take cryptocurrency seriously. It wasn’t until 2015 that Vitalik Buterin and his colleagues recognised the potential of blockchain and used it to bring their product Ethereum online.
The features contained in Ethereum, put Fintech and the genius behind Satoshi’s development in a new light. As a side note, the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, or whether he is a real person or not, is unknown!
Most people believe that the early days of the world’s first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, opened the way for the Age of Fintech. However, Fintech’s history goes back to the second Industrial Revolution when bankers realised that they could transmit telegraph lines to transmit financial information across long distances.
In 1851, an American entrepreneur called Samuel Selden launched Western Union which later took advantage of telex and computers to expand their reach and become one of the largest money transfer services in the world.
Did you know you could find cryptocurrency courses online?
The building of Fintech’s basic infrastructure took about 100 years and it was only when analogue systems began to become digital, in 1967, that the second era of Fintech, characterised by cash machines, personal computers and stock markets, exploded onto the scene.
Unchecked and unregulated, banks began to speculate with private money like retirement funds and investment portfolios. For a while, risky gambles raked in huge profits and gave rise to new financial vehicles enabling Wall Street traders to bet on thin air. Tragically for many, that financial house of cards imploded in 2008 leading to a global economic meltdown and the end of Fintech’s second era.
Historically, careers in finance were thought to be secure, stable professions that were also lucrative. Today, jobs in Fintech appeal to those with bright, creative minds who think critically and like to problem-solve in a space that is run by cutting-edge technology.
Not only is it considered a stable profession but statistics show that there is an ever-growing need for coders who understand finance.
Fintech enterprises are exciting, dynamic and collaborative. Company culture is generally transformative and entrepreneurial rather than characterised by traditional hierarchies of the past.
If this is a career that sounds appealing to you, a good place to start or supplement your economics education would be to find cryptocurrency courses online.
Finding the right cryptocurrency class online could revolutionise your journey into the world of fintech. On a platform like Superprof, you could find a crypto lesson with an entrepreneur or investor who is an expert in Bitcoin. Many of the tutors who offer cryptocurrency courses online come from teaching backgrounds too, which means that they are able to offer a crypto lesson in easy-to-understand language.
When you take cryptocurrency courses online with a private tutor you will find relaxed, flexible teaching styles that are aimed at meeting your personal objectives.
Admittedly, it is not easy to find international, online Fintech degree programmes, however, if you find the right tutor for a cryptocurrency class online, it is highly likely that they can point you in the right direction and help you to carve out an educational path in Fintech to suit you.
