Now called Mbombela, Nelspruit (literally “Nels’ stream”) is the capital city of the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. The area originally attracted settlers, such as farmers and traders, because the soil was rich and fertile and the valley was very level. The Crocodile River also provided sufficient water for irrigation. The city, a gateway to the Kruger National Park, boasts, in its surrounds, a man-made rain-forest in the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, the Chimp Eden sanctuary at the Umhloti Nature Reserve and uncommon rock formations in the Sudwala Caves. You really find yourself in very special natural surroundings, with a sub-tropical climate and summers that are wetter than winters.
Taking Afrikaans lessons in this growing Lowveld city is really a good idea, as Afrikaans is the second most spoken language in the city. Knowing a second language is very conducive to good group relations as it builds mutual trust and respect. It also enhances understanding of Afrikaans-speakers’ culture, traditional practices and even their dress code. Closely allied to these would also be Afrikaans music, which, in a sense, connects you to the soul of the people.
One man’s meat is another man’s poison.
How one learns differs from person to person. A retiring (introverted, shy) person would be averse to attending classes where their shortcomings may be exposed in a very public way. Such a person would prefer to interact with a tutor in face-to-face encounters or via the Internet. This method is convenient because you, the student, can schedule lessons at a time that suits you and participate in lessons in the comfort of your own home. Parking, the weather, safety and security become non-issues for you with this method.
A thorough, experienced Afrikaans tutor or teacher will conduct an initial assessment of any new learner to identify an appropriate starting point (aanknopingspunt). Progressively, s/he will guide you through the various aspects of learning the Afrikaans, such as luister (listening), praat (speaking), lees (reading) and skryf (writing). The individualised attention will benefit you as the teacher/ tutor’s attention is squarely on you, your challenges, your progress and building your confidence.
S/he will design a curriculum built around your needs and the Afrikaans level you are currently at. The lesson plans will be dynamic, as they will be adapted to your rate of progress. Your tutor will correct any misunderstanding you may present and fix any pronunciation which may be off key, very similar to a music coach. With his/ her ear attuned to good Afrikaans, s/he will transport you to a very good level of proficiency in a very short space of time. Superprof has many good, caring tutors who will take you through your paces in a very professional, structured way. These tutors have been screened and are, thus, certified to tutor or teach a particular level. The site also lists all tutors, in a such a way, that it is easy for a student to compare them, in terms of a location, price, level of education and experience.
A fun-loving, pretty assured individual would not mind attending Afrikaans lessons at the premises of a tutoring service or language school, of which there are several in Nelspruit. Some of these institutions have a presence throughout South Africa and practise a tried and tested recipe, as they have been operational for many years. Their tutors are experienced, screened and well-qualified.
The drawbacks of learning in a group can be many, however. The group you join, may be large and so, you will not be afforded enough opportunity to practise speaking Afrikaans. The tutor may, additionally, be kept so busy by other students and addressing their queries that you may experience minimal exposure to Afrikaans and very little growth. Where written work is concerned, you may have to be satisfied with a written response, to your essay, as opposed to an in-depth discussion with your teacher about how to fix your attempts at creative writing in Afrikaans. Some students, of course, love the vibe and the energy learning in this way!
An advertisement (ad) reading Afrikaans tutor near me, would attract numerous responses, as Afrikaans is the second most spoken language in Nelspruit. There are, also, numerous people seeking to learn the language in the city. One ad offers a language exchange experience. While the advertiser would learn Afrikaans, s/he would be prepared to teach his/ her Afrikaans tutor French. Other languages can also be taught or learnt in this way. Participants spend half of their time speaking/ learning Afrikaans and the other half learning/ speaking the other language. A very interesting and supportive way to be exposed to a language, don’t you think?
You will be paired up with a native Afrikaans speaker, who might not help you with all the correct grammar you would find in a textbook. However, s/he may expose you to the language as it is spoken by a large group of people who live in the area where you live, work or study. This is an interesting way for you to learn from a native speaker, while she or he learns your language from you. These folks advertise which language they can teach or tutor and state which language or languages they are interested to learn. This could be a great forum for both parties because you will be ‘growing’ in the other person’s language on a daily basis. On the other hand, you will experience a bit of an ego boost as you will be the expert in your mother tongue, leading your partner towards proficiency in your home language. Another plus, with this method, is that you will also be learning functional Afrikaans, because you will be exposed to how the language is used by everyday people.
So, whether you choose immersion, language exchange, classes or webcam/ Internet sessions with a tutor, you have a number of options available to you. Your preference and budget will ultimate dictate how you take this magical journey, into a new world, forward! Voorwaarts!

Afrikaans tutor
I appreciate that Marie took the time to check what level my daughter was at before diving straight into the lesson. This helped them form a bond and allowed my daughter to feel more comfortable with her tutor. The extra effort with some homework...
