Krugersdorp is named after Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic, and was established after the discovery of gold, in the region, in 1887. The city is situated north-west of Johannesburg, in the province Gauteng and is still an industrial and mining centre. The region is world-renowned amongst archaeologists for, among others, the discovery of Mrs Ples and Little Foot in the Sterkfontein Caves, which are now a World Heritage Site.
Goeie dag! You’ve now been introduced to the historic region where many important events have taken place and where mankind roamed millions of years ago. You’re also in a region where Afrikaans is a very dominant language, where there is a strong heritage and culture that surrounds it. You are in a good place to immerse yourself in this Dutch-based language with a passionate native speaker by your side.
Afrikaans is fairly widely-used in South Africa, by many as a second language. You can, thus, expect to encounter many Afrikaans speakers as you go about your day to day activities. It may brighten a shop assistant’s day we you attempt to find out something about a shirt in her mother tongue. A smile may follow and you be left feeling lighter and more confident about the learning expedition you’ve embarked upon. The way to learn a new language is to use it!
Your new job may require that you be bilingual. Afrikaans is, then, not too difficult an option! And, if that job requires you to interact with clients daily, they’ll be impressed by your ability to switch to their language of choice! In a sales environment you’ll fully understand that voetstoots refers to an item being bought ‘as is’, effectively used and with possible defects; also that huur gaat voor koop is a legal term stating that a lease precedes a purchase agreement and has pre-eminence over it.
Whatever route you choose to follow, the sooner you start Afrikaans lessons, the better. Learning a foreign language can be facilitated by an expert tutor. If you enrol for an Afrikaans course, your tutor will ensure that you follow a structured curriculum, which will systematically grow your knowledge of and proficiency in the use of the language. Skills learned by studying a language, which is foreign to you, will stand you in good stead for a considerable time into the future.
How and where you study will always be a matter of personal choice. The University of the Witwatersrand has a language school, which offers courses in Afrikaans at three (3) levels. Each level has classes which are 80 hours long. These courses are at beginner, elementary and pre-intermediate levels, each culminating in you being awarded either a Certificate of Attendance or one of Competence. The former is contingent on you attending a minimum of 80% of classes and the latter on the successful completion of tests.
Several private language schools and tutoring companies offer Afrikaans lessons at various levels. Some offer physical classes and others both physical and online lessons. Once again, the choice is yours.
Superprof has a range of excellent individuals who offer private tuition in a host of subjects, from painting and guitar-playing, all the way through to you favourite subject, Afrikaans. Most of these tutors have a love for Afrikaans and they teach it with sensitivity, passion and a great love for the language. Binnekort, they’ll have you singing “Water-blommetjies inni Kaap”. Since they are, generally, native speakers, their understanding of the language and their knowledge of its nuances will bring you to a deeper understanding and appreciation of all that is Afrikaans - its culture, food, traditions and celebrations. You’ll pretty soon find out that a braai is not a barbecue! You will, however, find out that it’s an opportunity to kuier!
Many Afrikaans words are spelled exactly the same as their English counterparts, but the pronunciation is different. There is, unfortunately, no Afrikaans course on the Duolingo website, but someone has created a course using Memrise in a very similar way to Duolingo. Called Duolingo Afrikaans, it is still being constructed, so you may not find all the assistance you require there.
Online, there are also websites which will help you translate text in almost any language into another. This is a great resource as the word you type in English, for example) will be translated and pronounced for you in Afrikaans.
So, you think that Afrikaans tutoring will be pricey?
Superprof tutors in Krugersdorp, charge a less than R150 per hour. These well-qualified professionals will provide lessons online or travel and provide them in the comfort and security of your home. The Superprof website is in a user-friendly format and tutors can easily be compared in terms of experience, qualifications, price and levels at which they tutor. Previous students also leave reviews which you can scroll through before you make your selection. Oh, by the way, all the current tutors offer the first lesson free! Great for you to decide if the two of you are a great fit!
Your Afrikaans skills will be sought after, as South Africa is a multilingual country and translators are in great demand. You could freelance and translate advertisements, billboards and many forms of documents. Various government departments also require the services of translators and they also provide an invaluable service in the country’s courts of law. Of course, writers and journalists, since we have so many community newspapers, are also regularly needed on a full-time or freelance basis. Afrikaans tutors and teachers are always required as an increasing number of learners are enrolling for Afrikaans as a second language at school level. All in all, you newfound skills will continue to meet a growing audience.
There is no time like the present! So, strike while the iron is hot and enrol for a course in Afrikaans, somewhere, today! Ou maat, jy sal dit terdeë geniet!
