About Richard

I've been playing music all of my life, and the drums for the last 13 years. Since graduating from Leeds Conservatoire in 2017, I've worked as a tutor and performer, teaching privately and for Leeds City Council as well as various educational institutions including Leeds Junior Conservatoire as part of the Wolfson foundation initiative. My students in this time have earned high distinctions in Rockschool and trinity exams (marks range from 86-98%), and gone on to play in leading ensembles such as the National Youth Orchestra.

As a performer, I've played for Leeds based artists such as August Charles, with who I had the amazing opportunity to tour with Emili Sande, take to the stage with the Grammy winning 'Blue Lab Beats' as well as opening for Nile Rogers and Chic in the Peace Hall at Halifax last year. I've also performed and recorded with Skinny Living, who's album 'Day By Day' topped the UK independent charts in 2024.

I have a real passion for music, and draw on this experience to give students an insight into the skills that I've found most valuable during my time working in the industry.

About the lesson

My lessons are individually planned out to cater to the students personal aims and requirements, whether they be to complete grades (I have a 100% pass rate on both Rockschool and Trinity syllabuses at merit or above), learn the basics of the instrument, play in your first band or to nail audition processes. I take students of any age and always approach learning in a fun and relaxed way.

I'll be drawing on years of experience both as a tutor and professional performer to provide practical advice on how to learn new skills in a time efficient and structured manner that will build a strong foundation for your playing.

Other subjects you can expect to cover are:
- Stick technique and control
- Time keeping and developing your groove and feel
- Reading and understanding musical notation
- Understanding rhythmic concepts
- Generating control at the drum kit
- Song learning
- Developing listening skills
- Improvisation

I offer lessons online or in person around the Leeds area. I am fully DBS checked and hold a clean UK driving license.

Lessons tend to run for an hour as standard and for best results, I recommend taking a weekly session.

I would highly recommend Richard as a teacher for drum lessons. He provided a clear set of goals for the short, medium and long term to work towards that are relevant towards what I want to achieve. He has also provided plenty of exercises I can work with that are really time-flexible, whether I have 5 minutes or an hour to practice. Really friendly and positive throughout!

In short, Richard is a superb teacher who I thoroughly recommend to students of any level.

In a bit more detail, he started teaching our son four years ago, when our son was 8. He completely overhauled his technique over a few months in such an organic way that my son didn’t really realise it was happening. He is extremely energetic, inspiring and encouraging. He is equally adept teaching across any number of styles and it has been a genuine pleasure hearing how my son has developed as a drummer over Richard’s tutelage over the years. However, Richard made my whole experience not only easy but incredibly enjoyable. He was always patient, supportive, and dedicated to helping me learn in the best possible way.
