Learn the Art of Traditional Hatmaking from a Master Milliner

Whether you're a complete beginner, a fashion student, a costume designer, or an experienced maker looking to refine your skills, I offer personalized millinery instruction rooted in traditional craftsmanship and over two decades of professional experience.

My lessons are individually tailored to your interests and goals. Whether you want to make your first felt fedora, create an elaborate couture headpiece, restore a vintage hat, or build a collection for your fashion brand, we'll develop a course of study that fits your experience and ambitions.

Students can learn virtually every aspect of traditional millinery, including:

Felt hat making for men's and women's hats
Straw hat construction and finishing
Couture millinery and special occasion hats
Pattern making and design development
Blocking techniques using wood
Wire frames and structural foundations
Hand sewing and traditional construction methods
Brim cutting, edge finishing, and binding
Trimming with ribbon, feathers, leather, silk, and other materials
Blocking and shaping using steam
Custom sizing and fit
Hat restoration and renovation
Historical and theatrical millinery
Sculptural and experimental millinery techniques
Designing and carving your own custom wooden hat blocks and forms

One of the most valuable parts of my teaching is helping students understand the professional side of the craft. I'll introduce you to the specialized tools used by working milliners and help you source high-quality materials, whether locally in New York City or from trusted suppliers throughout the United States, Europe, and beyond. Knowing where to find the right felt, straw, ribbon, feathers, buckram, wooden blocks, and specialty supplies is an essential part of becoming a successful hatmaker.

Lessons are available in person in New York City or online through live video instruction. Online students receive the same personalized guidance, demonstrations, and feedback, with projects adapted to their workspace and available tools.

My goal is not simply to teach you how to complete a single project—I want to give you the knowledge and confidence to continue making hats independently. You'll gain an understanding of the materials, tools, construction methods, and design principles that have defined fine millinery for generations while developing your own creative voice.

Whether you're pursuing a professional career, creating costumes for theater, launching your own brand, or simply discovering the joy of making something by hand, I'd love to help you become part of the rich tradition of millinery.
