About Fiona

Hi, I’m Fiona, a native Mandarin speaker with international study and cross-cultural experience.

During graduate school, I worked as a tutor, holding office hours and helping students review course materials in English. That was when I discovered how much I enjoyed teaching — especially the conversations and cultural exchange that came with it.

Later, I worked with an international volunteer organization and lived closely with people from different countries. I often found myself explaining Chinese expressions, pop culture, and little things about everyday life in China. It made me realize how much can get lost between how China is understood from the outside and how it actually feels to live here.

That’s what I’d love to share through my lessons: not just Mandarin, but China from a native speaker’s everyday perspective. I’m also a big believer that language is easier to learn when you genuinely enjoy the content — so don’t be surprised if a TV show, meme, or trending topic finds its way into our conversations!

About the lesson

My lessons are built around one simple idea: Chinese should feel like a language you can actually use, not just something you study from a textbook.

I focus on real conversations, everyday expressions, pronunciation, and the cultural context behind the language. We might learn through real-life situations, Chinese TV shows, social media, music, memes, or simply a topic you are curious about.

A typical lesson starts with a practical topic — ordering food, traveling in China, meeting new people, or chatting with Chinese friends. We learn useful expressions through the situation and practice them in conversation. I’ll also show you how native speakers actually talk, including expressions that may be correct in a textbook but sound unnatural in real life.

I have studied abroad and lived and worked with people from different countries through an international volunteer organization, where I often helped international participants understand Chinese expressions and pop culture. This experience also helps me explain Chinese and cultural differences clearly in English.

My lessons are especially suitable for beginners and intermediate learners who want to speak more naturally and understand modern China beyond textbooks.
